Former #40 Tex Wanganeen

Hird - was a Cat B, yeah? Not a father / son.
J Daniher wasn’t a bust.

I don’t think he makes it tbh. It feels like the sun is setting on his AFL career with the Bombers and unless something drastically changes I think he will be delisted.

To the wider discussion on our F/S success hit rate I’ve been disappointed with our record in recent times and indeed I’d even extend that to our NGA academy players as well. I’m sure the club has invested significant budget on both programs but we seem to have less success here than some of our rivals. I don’t know what the answers are or why that may be the case but it is an area of our footy program that needs improvement I think.

Wanganeen was an SSP so not a F/S either

FWIW, the Navicular injuries he keeps having is a stress (overload) injury, we might actually have to dial his loads back a little to get it right.

I think he’s only very fractionally safer than Hunter and Weideman when it comes to upcoming delistings at the moment.

If we can snare a ready made forward pocket in the offseason, or get a highly rated one in the draft, he’s definitely gone. But if we don’t maybe we keep him because we just don’t have anything on the shelf yet. Even that is dependent on no further injury and getting near to AFL selection at the back end of the year.

The really odd thing for me is, he has his third? Navicular injury and then bulks up big.

Some players never are outstanding in VFL, but make it once they get a chance at the top level. In the past, it was always the practice to give exposure to recruits as soon as possible, but this has changed as there is nowhere to hide anyone these days.

There are exceptions like Damien Peverill or Gary O’Donnell, but they both worked so hard to be successful.

Going to intimidate his foot into submission.

Regardless of how they come to us we haven’t had much success.

How many goals did Daniher kick for us this weekend?

Navicular injury is not actually about the size of the bloke apparently, it is more about a repetition injury.

Mostly to do with running on hard surfaces and over-training. Last century when I used to run a bit, out of a group of 30 runners, who did mostly the same training, two or three had their careers cut short because of these stress injuries. Seems to hit some more than others, so probably more to do with bone structure than body mass.

LOL, Port didn’t want him.

What, not even as a free hit?

Nope. That’s why Gavin suddenly became an Essendon fan again.

I hope Tex and Gav have the (Tex comes good) opportunity to “stick it right up 'em.”

Gavin was the rubber man. Tex is the dried rubber man.

Fair enough, I thought I remembered Hird trimming down a lot after his reoccurring problems

Maybe but I don’t recall Hirdy ever weighing a lot. They said he was 89 kg but never could see it on him.

If Tex has a solid second half of the year and is doing everything possible off the field to extend his career then I have no issue giving him a 1 year extension given his talent and our dire small forward stocks. It’s not like the lower leagues are bursting with elite potential goal kicking small forwards. After all these years of development I’d say giving him one more year is a better bet than what we might find at the lower levels.

In terms of small forwards we have Jayden Davey who is showing very promising levels of talent after a long layoff. Then we have Menzie who doesn’t look AFL standard at the moment and I question his talent ceiling given his lack of elite pace. That is all.

Could you actually imagine 2 x indigenous father sons J.Davey and Tex Wanganeen lighting up the MCG kicking goals from the pocket for the EFC.
