That too
Snello rated our No 1 player in the loss against Port.
Darcy and Sad, well they are a given.
Snello is under the radar a bit, but seems to give a stuff.
I can’t see us winning finals with players like Snelling in the team. Too small and often out-marked when the opposition is coming out of defense.
I’ll also add that my comments are based on the rest of the midfield being small. Caleb Daniel has exceptional disposal and is surrounded by big bodied mids, therefore can afford to carry him in the side.
Agree - great guy though.
May well be. But there’s probably at least 10 others you’d show the door first, so surely stays on the list for next year.
Considering our lack of effort at the contest, Snelling is one of those I’d keep on just to set the standard. “Sure kid, you’ve got talent, but until you put in the effort that Meatball does, you’re playing reserves.”
Agree, he tries and could be used as depth if say Smith is injured.
His best, and arguably the only attribute that is/will keep him in the team is his defensive running. His lack of height compounds our size issue through the middle and his skills don’t add anything. But to his credit, I’ve not seen him put in less that 100% effort.
It would have been a good role for Begley to be groomed for, as he had the skill, the size and a tank that could have been developed to the required level that would have complemented our core midfielders; but our aimless development hasn’t been able to settle on what they want him to be and he’ll likely be delisted because of it.
Snelling is better than you guys are giving him credit for. He also plays the style of footy that we’re trying to teach the team. His spot is very safe. High pressure player that doesn’t make many mistakes.
Problem is that he’s really not.
He is a depth player at best. I know people in here love tackle and pressure numbers, but how many of those tackles are at a hit-out where his opponent beats him to the ball and then he immediately tackles them? I rate tackles where a player runs down another player, not just standing there and tackling during a ruck contest.
I’d say, reading through his thread, that ‘the love for this guy’ is patchy at best, with most people feeling he is below average, and some feeling that his consistent effort get him over the average line.
If he could handball well he’d go up about three notches. We are trying to play a high handball game and many of our players don’t have the peripheral vision and/or handball skills to make it effective. Like, most of our players. It shouldn’t be that hard and maybe for Snelling who after all is not very used to playing at this pace/pressure the skills will settle - I doubt he’d be on the list if at training he handballed like a fair number of his in game efforts.
I’ve spent enough time on this site defending Zaka but he’s mostly pretty good with the release handball. I think a lot of it is just seeing the option in the first place - I’m sure a lot are just seeing blur. I reckon Longy and Hird could just about have told you eye colour of potential Handball receivers and tackle threats. We need most of our guys around the ball and playing link roles to get if not that level then at least competent at handball craft (both reading the packs and the basic skill execution under heat), and they aren’t there yet. If Snelling can get there (and hopefully make his kicks hurt a bit too) he’ll be valuable.
He had 8 possessions and 2 tackles. Had less defensive pressure acts than Dylan Shiel.
That is a deeply flawed performance tool
Shiel had an enormous amount of pressure acts in that game. Most on ground. So that’s hardly a knock on Snelling.
Nice, but get your eyes tested. Red and teal.
Listen to SEN Rob Harding interview from just now if its available on replay.
Said 2017-18 we believed at end of 18,we thought, yep,we can push now for finals wins.By 2020 with Hooker n Hurley at the end we might just snag one.
2019-20…well clearly its a misfire,and he thinks,quite obviously,we need to rebuild.
Yet board members still cling to the delusion?
Surely this right now is a wonderful opportunity for some heart to heart conversation with absolutely everyone.
Players,coaches,recruiting.
The executive.
Be honest EFC,it didn’t work out.
And that’s ok,let’s unite and go again.
This is where we can create a culture.
But don’t give us marketing spin, and delusions.
Please.
I was highlighting that he didn’t top that statistical category either (Shiel did).
Snelling was so far from best on for us it ain’t funny.
Some of the stats used in today’s game are horseshit. Champion Data, though with its flaws, is still the best stats tool for PLAYERS WHO GET THE FOOTY. But not for defenders or role players.
Oh right. Yeah i don’t understand that player rating thing at all. Sometimes it looks way off.
Perhaps the algorithm includes how much running a player does.
According to the AFL tracker, Snelling did the most running on the ground of any player: 13.1 Km. (Note: Overall Port players ran just 1.4 Km more than Essendon players over the whole game. We certainly put the hard running in, we just weren’t very productive with it).
He also had the highest average speed in attack on the ground: 10.5 Km/h. (Note we very strong at running forward. We had the Top 5 players on the ground against Port in this stat and we normally have that nearly every week).
So you would much rather the opposition have clean clearances…riiiiiigghhht.
At least he tackles
