Former #40 Will “Snello” Snelling

They must have more knowledge about the final list position, now this guy is contracted.
Probably deserved 2 year deal in a normal year, with a smaller list, 1 year makes sense.

which makes no sense, cos who exactly do they have coming through ?
mozzie is gone for a year, and they didn’t give him a game til what the richmond game when the season was over ( suggests they don’t rate him either)
cahill ?? he looks good no doubt, but that’s one player and again only gave him a couple of games mid season.

who else exactly do they have to fill the HFF/fp role other than snelling and tippa ?

he deserved a 2 year deal, giving him a 1 year seems very odd considering he was probably the best performed forward across the whole season.

edit oh wait i forgot zaka will be moved back to the HFF next year, esp if dunkley and caldwall both get here.
my mistake the forwardline is totally fixed with that EFC legend moving back to his 2 possession spot

“It was a tough season, but as a playing group we’re committed to a pre-season that demands high standards amongst us all and I know ‘Truck’ (senior coach Ben Rutten) will drive this hard.

All the messaging from Rutten has been about emphasising forward pressure and playing a front half game.

If they hold to that, I think he’s got to be best 22.
Not much chop with the footy, but he’s a great little tackler.

Is he still on the rookie list?

Will Snelling signs a one-year contract extension to lock in 2021 as a Bomber.

Will Snelling 's career reboot continues to go from strength to strength, with the midfielder-forward signing a one-year contract extension to keep him in the red and black until at least the end of 2021.

The 23-year-old joined Essendon via the 2019 NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft from SANFL club West Adelaide, having been delisted by Port Adelaide after three seasons on the Power’s list.

Playing four senior games in 2019, Snelling built on an impressive start to become one of just four Bombers to feature in all 17 matches in 2020, taking his career tally to 22.

The South Australian has made a name for himself as a pressure forward who can make an impact in stints in midfield, placing 16th for total tackles (79) and 18thfor total tackles inside 50 (17) this year.

Snelling said he was thrilled to continue his career with the Bombers, who he grew up barracking for.

“I’m excited to have re-signed with the club for the 2021 season,” Snelling said.

“I was really grateful to the Essendon Football Club to give me an opportunity again at AFL level. Being out of the game has given me greater perspective so I’m appreciative for the faith the club has shown. I am rapt to have committed to another year.

“It was a tough season, but as a playing group we’re committed to a pre-season that demands high standards amongst us all and I know ‘Truck’ (senior coach Ben Rutten) will drive this hard. I’m really looking forward to coming back to the club in the coming weeks and starting under Truck’s program as he takes this group forward into 2021 and beyond.”

He is a hard worker and is someone we can rely on to bring intensity and effort every time he steps out on to the field.
Adrian Dodoro

General manager of list and recruiting Adrian Dodoro said Snelling’s contract extension was a due reward for his hard work.

“This is a terrific reward for Will, who came to us in a non-traditional pathway but has grasped his opportunity with both hands,” Dodoro said.

“He is a hard worker and is someone we can rely on to bring intensity and effort every time he steps out on to the field.

“We see a lot of upside with Will, and hopefully another pre-season under his belt will help him grow under the guidance of new senior coach Ben Rutten.

“We look forward to seeing Will develop next season and contribute towards bringing our club on-field success.”

I like this dwarf. But let’s be serious. A one year contract is fair & keeps him honest.

I actually wouldn’t mind see him work as a back pocket stopper. He is tenacious & hard at it. Plus gives his all and has lots of courage.

Another year is about right with a trigger for a second based on performance. This way it’s up to him.

I think a lot more players should be contracted this way. The club can’t be just handing out mega deals to blokes that look great in contract signing years are spend time in rehab for the next three years whilst taking up 1/7th of the salary cap, A la Daniher, Fantasia for example.

Very happy for the little nugget. He’s got a bit of mongrel about him. Handy depth player who knows where the goals are.

The remarkable revival of Will Snelling’s career continues to impress.

It’s not often players get second chances at AFL level, and it’s certainly no given they’ll grasp them.

But when it comes to the newly re-signed Will Snelling , you can’t help but marvel at one of the AFL’s most recent successful career revivals.

Delisted in 2018 after three seasons at Port Adelaide, the South Australian could have easily given up on his resurrecting his AFL dream.

But after a stirring return to SANFL club West Adelaide, a second chance came when Snelling was selected at pick No.7 in the inaugural mid-season rookie draft by Essendon - the club he grew up barracking for.

Juggling a health and medical science degree with part-time work as a barista at the time, Snelling suddenly found himself packing his bags and heading off to Melbourne the next day.

And he’s wasted no time since his arrival at Bomberland on May 28 last year, going from a rookie with potential to a mainstay in the Essendon line-up.

One of just five players to feature in all 17 of the Bombers’ matches this season, the 23-year-old’s consistent performances saw him finish ninth in the club’s Crichton Medal count and earn a one-year contract extension.

He led the club for tackles (79), placed fourth for goal assists (six), fifth for total clearances (29) and sixth for total contested possessions (104) in a breakout season.

It’s a dream scenario Snelling now finds himself in, and a starkly different one to that at the end of 2018.

A captain and Most Valuable Player of South Australia’s NAB AFL U18 Championships side in 2015 and SANFL premiership player with West Adelaide in the same year, Snelling was initially recruited to Port Adelaide with pick No.10 in the 2016 rookie draft.

He made his debut for the Power in round 23, 2016 against Gold Coast, but it was his only appearance at senior level during his three years at Alberton Oval.

Snelling still showed he had a clear talent for AFL football, however, producing a stellar SANFL season in 2018 to win the A.R. McLean Medal as Port Adelaide’s reserves’ best and fairest, and the Fos Williams Memorial Trophy as their most consistent performer.

Yet, Snelling was not offered a new contract and found himself back at West Adelaide, with a point to prove.

After being delisted, he told portadelaidefc.com.au, “I’m pretty desperate to give it another crack. I’m still quite young, so I think I have a lot to give still in the AFL system."

It was a motivating factor which spurred Snelling to show his professionalism, talent and hard work, which resulted in a second chance with the Bombers.

Having appeared 22 times in the red and black, he can now lay claim to having played the equal highest games of anyone from the AFL’s first mid-season draft alongside Collingwood’s John Noble.

It’s an incredible achievement for the man affectionally known as ‘Meatball’, who is highly regarded by his teammates for his work ethic, and always one of the coaches’ first picked.

Bombers fans will be hoping Snelling can continue his rise as the club strives for success in 2021.

Lachie Johnson says hi

Keeping him on 1 year deals is pretty stingy IMO (based on performance)…but it says to me that there are simply no other suitors.

Type of player that will get a game in Richmonds side.

Richmond value tackling/hard workers over just talent

I’m a fan, played like a man this year, something I can’t say about many of our players. Can play small forward and mid and will be very handy this year.

Agree.

It’s when he is playing strong consistent footy in the 2’s but can’t get a game, that we are going well.

Great to plug and play with an injury, but not a starting mid if we are going to climb up the ladder.

Like many top sides do,in several positions.

I think 1 year deals is the way to go with Snelling.

Has a great work ethic and pretty confident he’s very coachable, but like many of our players he lacks polish forward of centre.

Only had 11 shots at goal for 5 goals.

Needs to be having more impact.

no more please. if all he’s doing is “applying pressure” then find a fit guy with upside. you need to be able to do something other than chase blokes

he’s so very limited, and not good enough for senior footy

Yeah this guy is a massive battler.
Dont rate him at all and Tippa is fast approaching that judgement too.

Snelling and Cahill surplus

I reckon you guys are wrong. Small forwards spend 90% of the match just running around applying pressure these days.

Shai Bolton is a gun and Thursday he just ran around and applied pressure and then kicked that nice goal at the end.

Snell kicked a nice one similar to Bolton’s. Shame it was for the win like Bolton’s.

Tippa kicked a couple.

They did their bit.
