Former #40 Will “Snello” Snelling

End the experiment

Forgive my ignorance but I thought he came on as a small forward to kick goals and provide forward half pressure. I think he’s ended up being a pseudo tagger and back-up midfielder.

I think he’s another example of the coaches either plugging holes, not playing players in their best positions, or not giving specific instructions on what they want from him.

We’ll never have a good team if the coaches don’t assign the right players to the positions we lack in (such as small pressure forwards that can kick goals).

Snelling came as a midfielder not a small forward. Has learned the small forward role since joining the club.

If we drafted him as an 18yo we’d all be frothing the MEATBALL

Who said we do not develop our players, they come as one thing, we turn them into something else where they do not play within their strengths whether they like it or not , its what we need then; when they don’t like it they want to leave. The club says “What’s wrong with him, it must be they want more money?” They are always right, for them, the EFC. Very intuitive.

Can update the topic to “signed for 2021”.

Congratulations, Will. I hope you’re able to enjoy what you do and contribute to the EFC climbing the ladder.

Actually pretty surprised he only got the 1yr given his B&F result

Also that was a FA and could walk over to SA if wanted to.

But good he is onboard again!

Agree. Good signing.
Need these tenacious types.
Very happy with the efforts he puts in!!

Yes and no. He’s gonna be one of those guys that’s always battling to stay on a list. I think the first instance of him having a poor year and he’s cut, as brutal as that sounds, that’s his lot. He would have to finish top 3 in the B&F to secure a multi-season deal. But, based off last year, well and truly earned another year, so I’m very happy for him.

Deserves another year.

Would love to see him play more forward and add pressure down there.

Yeah that sums it up.

I like him and hope he can carve out a longer career for us.

I get what saying but how often is the best 22 on the park though? Never.

So best 25-30 you’d want to have secured. He’s going to play a fair bit for us still in 2021 IMO

In any case good on him for staying and the club for getting him to on 1yr

The love for Lav vs the critique of Snelling shows how bias is prevalent.

If the guy is so poor, how did he finish top 10? What does that say about our list? Or do we acknowledge that you win flags with foot soldiers who play their part. I know which camp I am in.

I like him but I also think it’s a smart call to just lock him in for the one year.

He had a solid season and yes he polled well in the Crichton - he was also one of just five players to have played every game, which helped him climb a few spots IMO (props for durability, though!).

With Heppell set to return, along with the addition of Caldwell (and perhaps even Dunkley), I doubt he’ll see many midfield minutes next year.

There’s definitely a spot in the side for him as a small forward if he’s good enough (and I hope he is) but the jury is still out in that regard.

Handy depth at this stage, hopefully he hasn’t hit his ceiling.

I think he’s absolutely best 22, as a half forward. But that won’t be too hard considering we don’t have many options - Walla, 2nd year Cahill, Zaka. He literally won’t have any competition for a forward spot unless we bring in some more small forwards. Such a shame Mozzie went down because it would have been a golden opportunity to pump games into him.

Good, well deserved

Well done Will

One year contract says that, B&F results notwithstanding, the club sees him as fringe or stopgap rather than a core element to build the list around. If he was highly-rated internally, he’d have been offered two.

Perhaps he will step into the void being left by Fantasia and Mozzie this year.
