D’Ambrosio is a great MSD pickup for us. Outside of Culley (who I have on par in terms of ability but higher as a positional need), there was no better player available. He’s a super kick, is coachable, has clear and obvious production at every level he’s played, is tenacious, and brave in the air. While he’s not a lock down small, he’ll give great effort 1v1 and really change our ball movement off half back.
Massimo will be a regular early next season. And that’s if he isn’t before 2022 is run and done. He’s also just turned 19, which is a massive bonus when considering his talent.
Those saying we should have taken Carmichael or another big bodied mid because of ‘needs’ are neglecting the fact that those players may be clearly below the the level of player D’Ambrosio is or will become. Carmichael, for example, despite his SANFL numbers, hasn’t displayed the stoppage or inside mid craft that would allow him to get games in our side (regardless of his physical size).
I’d be happy with D’Ambrosio as basically a free hit (like Snelling, Durham, Baldwin, Martin and Wanganeen) and look at the rising Mattaes Phillipou as the big bodied mid with our first round pick at year’s end.
