Former #8 Ben Hobbs

The squib on the wing was poor. He actually had a good look at what was coming and had no reason to go for the crappy one handed effort. Played pretty well except for the last quarter.

I failed to see what he did well today. Kicked a goal which you’d expect every player to kick. A couple of nice handballs. The rest involved the usual slow chasing, squibbing the contest on the wing and mindlessly turning it over.

I can’t believe people think he’d magically become a good player if he played in the middle.

He is a very limited player for a top draft pick

Thought it was one of his better games.
The subtle getting under the skin of his opponents is a joy.
Should have received a free for a blatant above the shoulder in the pocket- obviously hasn’t got a neck.

He is an MVP for this, we should give him that.

You’d rather he not get under the skin of his opponents?

He occupies the same area of my brain as Snelling.

Plenty of effort…but mark 35m out, and struggle with the distance.

Confirmed to be a bust

Was a bust 2 years ago

Like Snelling, Hobbs comes across as that player that’s too good for VFL, but doesn’t have AFL traits.

We’re not the first team to draft such a player in the first round, and we surely won’t be the last

If Hobbs can apply himself to be impactful off the ball like Snelling did, he’ll have a career. I have my doubts though.

Snelling is a 2nd tier comp player…….is that your comparison!

If you scroll one post higher you’ll see the Snelling comparison

Just doesn’t have the pace, tank or skill to play the role we’re asking him to play

More apt comparison is that Hobbs is a second tier player. Would be good at VFL, SANFL etc

Same as Snelling

I mean, sure? Snelling was a meaningful contributor for a number of years but just didn’t have any tricks outside his defensive stuff to stick around.

Hobbs clearly has more capability but for me it’s 50/50 if he has any career longevity. Though if he applies himself like Snelling did to play a team-first role, he’ll stick around.

Wow alot of hate on here. I thought he played well & I like his role.

Can also compete in the midfield when the ball is in the half forward range aswell. & it’s in there lots as we like pumping into our 50, need to get better at ■■■■■■■ holding it in there though

Hobbs is yet another who epitomizes Essington.

He already applies himself to that but he’s just an average runner. It’s the rest of his game that is ordinary / rubbish

Won’t be on an AFL list in 2026

I can get past the fact he doesn’t have any speed. Some of the best footballers aren’t quick runners. But he has no speed to get ball to hand, foot or when needing to make decisions. He isn’t elusive and lacks genuine smarts. And if you’re not quick you need smarts!

Will probably end up being a very good VFL type player who has a long 200 game career.
