Friday Training 17/1/14

LEROY

Regarding Steinberg and going forward, my recollection of him is somene who liked to go for the big pack mark. I'm not familiar how he is in body on body contests.

Can‘t say what he‘s like as a forward, he hasn‘t played there for two years… but as a defender he almost always plays on someone bigger than him (including resting ruckmen) and he takes a LOT of marks by good positioning and little nudges (body, not hands).

I was at training today and on Monday. Hurley is looking more and more like a full back. Spoils well and runs out of defence well when he gets the ball. When playing on Joe, Hurley won pretty much all body on body contests. However when Joe was running and jumping at the ball he was very hard to stop.

Joe is still pushed out of the contest to easily due to his lack of body size. In time he will obviously develop this.

Initially l was concerned with the windy conditions. They become a factor to overcome in player development if they persist into too many sessions. However if the windy conditions mean players concentrate a fraction to make their kicks more accurate, in the long run this can only help their development. Make more second nature now and it will be totally automatic once they get into games on grounds that are protected from more blustery conditions.

You would think if the conditions were so bad outside for so long that it might hinder the players development they might just go into hangar to do skills training?

I think the club needs to learn how to handle the ball in the elements however, so I reckon itd be a last resort move to go inside.

Silly question…

Do the additional VFL listed players train with the AFL team?

Guys like A Heppell, millingtion, ducsher, hickey. Ect.

I will be interested in how JD goes in true one-on-one body contests in 2014. He will obviously improve with experience/weight, but still can't get out of my head,,Gumby still struggling in this facet of the game after 7 years. Maybe some players never develop this part of their game.

I havent seen any of the VFL listed players at training so assume they train at a separate time!

I seem to be noticing Hams in a lot of photos and videos etc. Is he doing a lot at training, could we see quite a bit of him this year? he seems like the type of player Bomber would love.

F@#k that bring back Henry Slattery and Hislop I say.

Get in the queues, bîtches*. Successor to Carlisle in getting the Next Big Thing** tag from me.
* I am not going ghetto by typing beyotches to get around the swear filter.
** not height-wise

Hopefully Heppell gets some training into the penetration on his kicks. Most of them were kinda floaty last year. He's got a great left boot, just needs to get over the top of it more.

I think this is correct (training at a separate time).

There was a twitter photo posted by EssendonVFL on Friday evening of the VFL squad out on the ground - they probably have 3(?) evening sessions a week and perhaps a weight session on the weekend (most would be working a job).

If I can get the training session times, I'll do some photos one night.

Dave.

Fair bet the will be a heppell involved. Just not A heppell. Fair bet there will be the odd hickey, and more than likely a douche or two, but I don't know what a millington is, so I can't help you there.

I only learned what a waffle stomp is, from here the other week. So there's always something to learn...

Body contests tend to be decided by leverage - a lower centre of gravity helps. Unlikely to ever be a strength of Daniher's. That said, I expect him to be better at it than gumbletron who effectively missed seven years of physical development due to injuries.

Mary Millington was a nude pommy model in the 70s, IIRC. Does that help? She ■■■■■■ off Mary Whitehouse...a lot.

Yep. Ta. Also helps clarify the hickeys and douches.
