Gerryn over Roberts?!

Archie Roberts FTW

What am I looking at in this photo?

I see a pole but not a poll.

Or is that the joke.jpg

Looks more like a pickle.

Like cucumbers that have been left to stew.

Any situation where Andy McGrath is considered the ā€œobviousā€ next choice as captain is as dire as it gets.

The standards he accepts and displays with his panicking under physical pressure (leading to no look dump kicks) and his half hearted tackling is not befitting of a captain. I have no issue with the notion that your captain doesn’t need to be your best player, no issue at all. But they can’t be lacking in the combative nature of the game. As average as Nick Maxwell was as a player he was at least 100% committed to the contest and a good organiser of the team.

Happy for McGrath to remain in the leadership group as he is clearly a thorough professional in his training habits, embraces the right lifestyle habits away from the game and he seems to have the ability to get on with everyone well. He can play an important role in that sense. Cannot have him being the prime representative of this playing group though.

It’s admittedly slim pickings but give me Durham, Caldwell or Duursma ahead of McGrath.

Seriously, do you think Durham is captain material? He’s a fantastic player, but he strikes me as someone who likes to concentrate solely on what he’s doing, when a captain has to do a lot more than that.

I would have similar reservations about Duursma.

I am more than happy to skip a generation.
Durham and Duursma are both 100 game players, Duursma (my first choice) plays like a captain already, and I think the extra responsibility would be good for Durham and give more agency to the extremely young side we’re building.

But of course it’s going to be McGrath because what this club does is more of the same and corporate pathways for the consistently mediocre.

THAT’S NOT US

THAT’S NOT WHO WE ARE OR WHAT WE STAND FOR

I was thinking more of personality than age. I have no objection to a young captain, but it has to be someone who’s temperamentally suited to the position. James Hird was appointed pretty young. Going back a couple of years – well, about half a century – Royce Hart was captain of Richmond at the age of about 22 or 23.

I think Merrett should go to Hawthorn and remain our captain. Coin toss would be hilarious.

Young team Young captain Young supporters

McGrath is fine. This group isn’t contending for a couple of years anyhow.

The important thing will who will be leader in 3?

I’d be making McGrath captain and identifying someone young(under 21) and putting them into the leadership group.

I’d stick with a defender too. They make the best captains imho.

What ? You mean you don’t want Gerreyn ? Unbelievable !

Dodo needs to be applauded. He envisaged this need way back in 2016. Sure, he created this mess, but that’s a minor detail.

Oh I love this.

I fear for McGrath if he becomes captain. It’s only going to magnify the already significant scrutiny on him.

This was his destiny.

Admittedly, his version probably had him holding the cup on GF day.

But here we are.
