Gather Round 2026 Review - A win from a different gameplan

Banged his head on the ground after him and some Melbourne guy clashed in a contest.

Whatever we do, don’t put Roberts in the midfield FFS Scott.

He is an Elite half back

ADW Ill memtion also, he really took the game on, especially with his agression at the contest, he also made good use of the football and really took the game on, some of his kicks were daring and really liked his game, took it on with dare.

Was at the game and it just looked from the stands that the kids are really settling in and know they are the ones who will drive the club forward. All impacted the game, not just with possessions but their presence as well. Now to keep it going.

Looked concussed, hopefully not.

:100: he bit two of the most daring corridor kicks that both paid off. And he has the best pipes at the club

Possibly.

Someone should post it on his twitter, instagram or what the Fark he has

I’m not sure if the chippy chippy works against good sides but let’s just enjoy it shall we :joy:

Don’t know if we have the personnel to play any different. People may not like it but I think this is the way forward.

We play too quick against defensive pressure, we go to water and get murdered off our turnovers. We were calm, composed and in control for the most part.

Ridley makes such a difference to our structure…let’s just hope he gets a good run with injury, so Reid can get some slightly more balanced games under his belt.

Could this be the first win of many this season?

We didn’t just win we thumped Melbourne and they are candidates for top 6.

The team has found a lot of confidence in the 7 days, enjoy the win, it could lead to something big

Today was Scott’s best coached game since he came to Essendon:

  • A game plan based on kicking, not manic handball. Since we made the change during the last week’s game, we have won 5 of the last 6 quarters played.
  • Picking a team for the opponent we were facing.
    • Taller backline absolutely smothered the Demons forwards - Melksham, Van Rooyen and Mihocek were the three lowest ranked players on the ground.
    • Caldwell to a HFF and played as the HF to push up to a stoppage. He is very good at getting clearances in those situations but is not a good centre square ball up clearance player.
    • Limiting the damage that Gawn and Pickett can do with Wright and McGrath. In the end, Wright and Gawn were about equal, both winning the most clearances for their side and Wright kicking a late goal. Pickett beat McGrath but wasn’t allowed to run wild like he did against the Suns and Blues. The longer the game went, the less effect he had.
    • Duursma now has his groove back playing where he belongs, on the wing. Langford has always been able to play wing and they both had their best gamesof the year. Day-Wickes played wing also and they rotated and he gets better with every game.
    • Making sure we always had players back in defence. It limited how the Demons could score from transition. We were only poor for a patch in Q2 but quickly addressed the issue.

Today also proved Tsatas belongs at AFL level and he and Parish can both play in the same side if Caldwell is moved to HFF in place of Perkins. Melbourne really are only 2 players - Gawn and Pickett plus support now from Steele. We spread the load much more evenly: Parish had 33 possessions, Merrett 31 and Tsatas 29. (Only Archie Roberts had more with 42). Parish’s second half was the best football he has played since 2021. The further the game went the further we got on top in clearances, easily winning them 41-32 - including winning centre ball up clearances by 1 after being spanked in that area early; yet, defensively we were excellent because the Demons hardly scored from that early centre clearance dominance.

That was the most physically developed Essendon side we have fielded in a long time, especially juniors like Day-Wickes, Robey, Caddy, etc. You can see what the focus on drafting has been for the last couple of years. We won contested ball by an astounding +28 and I felt having a physically bigger (albeit slower) side contributed to that.

Farrow continues to show he is perfectly at home at AFL level, just like Sharp already has and Robey did today. He may have had only 9 possessions as a HF but he looked calm and composed and not overawed at all. No one in today’s side deserves to get dropped if Sharp is cleared to play next week but Sharp has to play, if fit, as he is part of the future we are building.

With Tsatas coming into the side, Kako could move back to a small forward role and both he and Gresham made excellent contributions. We just need May and Caddy to kick the easy set shots the worked had to earn.

An excellent, interstate trip to play Gold Coast awaits us. If the Demons can beat them (albeit at the MCG), we can.
