Why do any number of things that may or may not be safe.

They also cost next to nothing
Pretty much. Everyone who has travelled has made errors, and for the most part, consequences are trivial (e.g., having to pay way more for a taxi as they were a dodgy operator, but it was in VND, so in reality it only cost me like $10 instead of $3) to just a bit of an inconvenience (e.g., any form of travellers diarrhoea).
This is an awfully severe, and potentially fatal, consequence for a really, really minor lapse in judgement. In fact, can’t even rule out they did nothing wrong, took all reasonable precautions, and have fallen victim to foul play.
They were an open secret outside the industry, and that’s making the phrase do a lot of heavy lifting.
The level of protection…well, call it what it is, privilege, for some is really kinda wild.
Wonder who he annoyed.
That was my first thought. I’m not body language expert, but he had the look of a person who knew they were in some deep ■■■■
His victims?
Couple decades ago, sure.
I meant recently.
He lost his radio god status and was therefore of no more use to his ideological compatriots in politics and business. No more guards at the gates. May he live long.
Bit of bragging there on Jones’s part.
Kate McClymont ran with a story in the SMH last December, after which a NSW police task force was set up.
She cited a few of her sources, no-one of note, some by name. They claimed that they wanted to see justice before he died, instead of a State funeral. Apparently this encouraged others to go to the cops

I’m sure his victims would still be annoyed, at the very least…
I suspect if Jones is found guilty he will receive a light sentence because of his age. He may even do an Epstein serve at home sentence.
But does his young valet have to stay, or does he get the arse?
Private power. The late tech entrepreneur Alex Hartman, who died in 2019, said Jones indecently assaulted him as a teenager. “I was his prey … I know I am not the only one, and this will come out somehow.” Hartman also claimed Jones “forces himself on young men and uses his power in a predatory way”.
Public power. Each and every time Jones came under attack from any direction, his supporters got to work. These days we have failed Liberal Party powerbroker Teena McQueen leaping to the defence of Jones in a humiliating exchange on WhatsApp. In those days, Jones’ supporters rang my employers at the University of Technology Sydney demanding I be sacked. The poor bloody women on reception copped it hard. My phone messages copped a couple of death threats and other abuse. Then there was the threat to rape my daughters. The threat named my daughters. Letters arrived with the most horrific descriptions of what the senders wanted to do to the receiver. Of course, none of this was at Jones’s instigation – but it shows the mindset of his supporters. So it wasn’t just fear of what Jones himself would say or do. It was fear of his supporters.
A couple in management went all weak-kneed, insisting I stand aside. Two of the most senior people at the university stood strong. But I feel no shame in saying I was afraid, afraid for my family, afraid for my job. Just afraid. Yet I was lucky. I never felt alone.

Evil slug
Not exactly what I meant, but thank you.
After a 9 month investigation.
Might have started with someone looking for a payout before he carks it and it’s snowballed from there.
The broadcaster’s former colleague Andrew Bolt said the allegations, if proven true, would see “one of the greatest falls from grace we have seen in this country”.
High-profile commentator Andrew Bolt said if the allegations that Jones indecently assaulted and sexually touched multiple men were proven, it would be “one of the greatest falls from grace” in Australian history.
“The man himself seemed frozen or, I don’t know, composed,” Bolt said of the moment Jones walked out of Day Street police station.
“How much of the Jones legend will survive this? Let the courts decide.”
Bolt said that “checks were made” before the News Corp-owned network hired Jones and that they weren’t aware of the allegations when he worked at Sky News.
The commentator questioned if Australia’s free speech laws made it “too dangerous” for alleged victims to make allegations against powerful people.
“I wonder how, if this is true, he could allegedly abuse staff at 2GB over years and years, and not one person in authority there knew?” Bolt asked.
2GB was Jones’ former employer and is owned by Nine Entertainment, which also owns this masthead.
Yes, I get that.
You can choose to believe the charges are the result of a whistleblower and a months-long investigation. No problem with that.
There’s no way I believe that. I believe he had protection and then he lost it.
The offences are decades old, and people didn’t just start talking to police or journalists a year or two ago.
Everyone knew, inside and outside the industry.
