If anyone hasn’t listened to History of Rome or Revolutions podcast, they are superb. The Haitian Revolution was one of the most interesting pieces of history to never get noticed, because black people. They were the first slaves to overthrow their masters and create their own nation.
Napoleon at one point tried to retake the islands, re-enslave all the blacks and set them back to dying in the sugar trade. The Haitians and diseases absolutely destroyed the French Army. Napoleon later wished he’d allied instead of fought the free Haitians. He could have used them to conquer all of the American colonies. Any European army that was sent to fight would lose half their number to disease, whereas the Haitians were immune. History would have gone down a very different road.
Instead they were embargoed by every European nation and the US. What had been the most profitable colony in the French empire decayed into squalor as they couldn’t buy or sell goods.
