Golf and related musings

Hopefully there will be no jokes about fried chicken and collard greens.

Am still using a M1 but I think last weekend it died .

Yep not much change from $1000 for a new gt3

How much are they paying that little leprechaun to come down to Royal Melbourne?

I’m heading down on Thurs, looking forward to it.

Hopefully will catch some glimpses of Rory, Min Woo and others. Most likely outcome is we sit in the clubhouse all day sinking beers.

Also going on Thursday. Shelled out for a place in the hospitality stand on the 17th green. Could be a real big day.
Rory’s group is off the 10th at 7:10 or so..

So glad to see it back at RM; it’s been too long.

1991? That’s criminal.

I couldn’t believe it had been so long. An absolute travesty

Downside of moving to QLD is I let go my RM membership if 30 years earlier this year.

TV doesn’t do justice to the brilliance of the layout. You don’t get a proper feel for the significant topography and undulations. The holes around 4-8 are very undulating and steep slopes. The green complexes are a thing of beauty. The 2nd shot into iconic 6th hole is steep up hill. I used to sit at the back of the 6th and just watch each group come through, many a player committed the cardinal sin of hitting shots above the hole or being too aggressive. 3 puts or worse a regular feature if inexperienced players.

The 2nd shot into the 4th is even steeper. It’s straight up hill and the green surface is so high above you that you can’t really see it.

Due to winds today they didn’t roll it / cut it. A pity. I hope the weekend is hard, fast and true bouncy RM greens.

It’s a national treasure that few really appreciate how good it actually is. If RM was in the US, it’d be regarded the best course in the world by many more ‘experts’ and players. It’s a gem.

Of all the holes at Royal, the one that scares me the most, strangely, is the par 3 5th. I stand over it and have no idea how I can get he ball on the green which really shouldn’t be an issue given that there’s nothing particularly terrifying about the hole. It just gets completely in my head

For average golfers the 5th W is very challenging. A shot left or right invariable requires a bunker shot from a deep bunker across a hard and fast green. Not unusual to see players go from bunker to bunker. A shot that doesn’t quite make the green is curtains, especially if the pin is at the front as there’s no green to play with and you have to be conservative with the shot sbd hit it well past the hole or it comes back down the slope to your feet!

The bunkers didn’t bother me it was just getting the distance right and the implications if I didn’t. (Missing long would basically means I was playing my 3rd from the bottom of the hill with my short game yips!)

So what was your best score at Royal Melbourne?

I wasn’t able to play it but I have been on the property a couple of times, as Presidents Cup spectator and later to take photos for Trackman. I got to go inside the maintenance building which is just unbelievable.

I was playing off about 15 for the most part. I had rounds in the low 80’s here and there.

Rory danger of missing the cut despite being less than complimentary about Royal. Would be funny, but I hope he does make it. Massive drawcard.

Would be a massive disappointment to have him MC. Just needs to finish off the round strongly.

He ends up 2 under and comfortably into the weekend. Min Woo and Scott right up there. Cracking weekend coming up.
