Very entertaining Major. When the course is genuinely difficult to play and scoring is much harder to come by, its such a better spectacle.

 for sure. No journalist dared to approach him after Bryson tapped in, that walk to the car was frosty as.

But the key here, is not only was it difficult, it was also interesting. Those who played well were able to score, those who didn’t couldn’t. It wasn’t the typical deep thick rough that punishes every mishit or mistaken thought the same with a hack out from deep rough with no chance to do anything interesting. As all the golf architecture nut jobs would say. Firm and fast with lots of short grass, and let the players show their artistry.

Pars were valuable, and birdies were like gold, but those who played well found them.

To be honest I didn’t think Bryson had it in him to win at a course like this (but I guess we should have known after the masters)

Great stuff Bryson. Go jam it McIlroy!!

That putt was over 3 feet. It was 3 feet 9 inches, so his record still stands.

It was a magnificent choke though.

Getting closer to my King Island / Morn Pen trip and after a bit of specific info for anyone lucky enough to have played all 3 of The National courses…I’m thinking of doing two courses in a day (may not pan out this way as we are getting older and will have a lot of golf to play).

Firstly - which two courses would you choose? I think we definitely have to do the old course as it’s on my buddies wish list… Moonah or Gun for the second?

Or is playing two of these in a day going to just drain us to the point of not being able to fully enjoy the second one?

Purely looking to do both in a day to save some cash…

I am lucky enough to be a membrr there.

How good is your golf?

Old is a must.

Moonah the best course but tough.

Gunnmatta fun for all standards.

You wont get on all three. One cpirse each day is members only.

54 hole challenge happens a bit there. But cant be done randomly

You will get beaten up on King Island (ocean dunes needs some water… been a drought… but is almost as good as cape wickham.

Thanks for the response - my golf at the moment is absolute trash but always enjoy a challenge! My buddy is a bit old school and enjoys good traditional courses…

Just waiting for the schedule to come out (pro told me 3 months in advance, trip is in Oct) to see which day we can play Old, then whichever course we choose as the second…would love to play all 3 but we will be playing plenty of amazing courses over the trip anyways…

I’m thinking that with most courses using carts we may be fresh enough as we usually walk…lucky enough to go round Barnbougle 1-2 times per year so get a bit of practice / fitness on those windy links courses…might just need to make sure we do the two National courses when we first get to Morn and then have a rest day after.

Agree with Simmo. Have done this many times. Play gunnamatta or moonah walking then carts up on the old is the way to go

The plebs complain that Pinehurst is ugly and rugged looking, and there was too much “luck” involved, but man, that’s golf. There seems to be this opinion that someone who missed as many fairways as DeChambeau did shouldn’t be winning the US Open… and that’s crap. That sort of thing takes away from the beauty of the recovery; the US Open should be about the one who manages his mistakes and removes himself from trouble, because everybody who plays in it will get in trouble.

Pinehurst was great. (I also really liked LACC.)

Love seeing a winner only slightly under par with the vast majority of the field over. A real test.

So much agreement here with your entire post. Golf is a 3 dimensional game, not just a test of one skill. That’s what makes it so great. It tests everything. And courses like Pinehurst, or closer to home RM make every single piece of your game relevant.

they should play at keilor or melton

I don’t really understand the nostalgia for the 80s US Opens with six inch rough on both sides of 10 metre wide fairways and you’d get winners like Andy North and Scott Simpson.
