Seeing a bit of ‘for memory’ of late.

I’m puzzled by “could care less”. All my life “I couldn’t care less” has been used by just about everyone, regardless of the extent of his or her education, socio-economic status, ethnic background or anything else. Even the French say it: “C’est le moindre de mes soucis.”

Then one day some imbecile who obviously doesn’t apply his or her brain to what is being said came out with “Could care less”, which means the exact opposite of what it’s intended to mean. And suddenly imbeciles everywhere are saying it.

It’s the same logical error as “The importance of avoiding nuclear war can’t be underestimated”, but I don’t think it comes from the same place. “Can’t be underestimated”, when what is actually meant is “Can’t be overestimated”, comes I think from the fact that “can’t” is often used as a synonym for “mustn’t”, as in “We can’t let that happen!” Actually, we can definitely let it happen and are in grave danger of doing so, but we mustn’t let it.

But there’s no excuse at all for “Could care less”, when you couldn’t.

A kinder interpretation might be that ‘can’t’ is short hand for ‘can’t afford to’ (‘shouldn’t’).
