Greatest Essendon Team of Alll

If you could make changes to the team of the century (below) to update it for the 150years what changes would you make?

B: Gavin Wanganeen, Fred Baring, Tom Fitzmaurice

HB: Barry Davis, Wally Buttworth, Harold Lambert

C: Reg Burgess, Jack Clarke, Michael Long

HF: James Hird, Ken Fraser, Terry Daniher

F: Bill Hutchison, John Coleman, Albert Thurgood

Foll: Simon Madden, Tim Watson, ■■■■ Reynolds(c)

Int: Mark Thompson, Keith Forbes, Frank Maher, William Griffith

Coach: Kevin Sheedy

I’d replace Joel Reynolds with Jobe.

Fletcher, Lloyd and Jobe are the only names that spring to mind as contenders but idk about all these old timey players to replace.

I don’t know one third of that team. Why aren’t Michael Symons and Ben Doolan in there? and Deal Wallis is a lock at CHB.

Good work!
Get Mercuri in there. To finish 2nd in the Brownlow is a massive achievement…… and he missed a couple of games that season.

I’d have Ben Rutten as Coach.

HAP would have John Worsfold as coach.

I would have D ick Reynolds as captain coach.

I dont mind this

Fletcher is straight in for Baring, games record, 2x AAs, B&Fs, 1993+2000 premierships

Lloyd has to come in at FF on weight of goals, probably for Daniher given he was ranked #11 to Fraser’s #7 in our all time team in 2002, but that means you need to shift Coleman to the pocket, and Hutchison to the flank. Coleman would be ■■■■■■. Maybe Lloyd gets the pocket. Either way you’re going to get daggers.

Daniher to the bench (!) replacing Griffith. Not a bad bloke to be able to call on.

I think that’s the only two changes I’d make.

Jobe in for Mark Thompson… maybe? Maybe not. Never had team success. Ditto Hooker. Hardwick would have been a good shot at a flank if he didn’t go to Port, but I think Thompson was better for longer and captained the club.

Surprised Burgess got that wing but the old timers rank him very highly. That said it looks like it is being kept warm for Zach who will finish his career a club great. Leon Baker must have been close.

Seriously, how are we supposed to change the team of the century when most of us only saw half the team play?

Absolutely. IMO, he’ll finish his career as one of the top five to have played for Essendon.

It’s subjective and a bit is based on what the history books tell us.

I’m sure the selectors at the time didn’t see the likes of Baring, Fitzmaurice and Thurgood play.

Noonan did.

Though he may not remember it that well these days as he was about 60 at the time

Heres my updated version so far

B: Gavin Wanganeen, Dustin Fletcher, Tom Fitzmaurice

HB: Barry Davis, Wally Buttsworth, Harold Lambert

C: Zach Merrett, Jobe Watson, Michael Long

HF: James Hird, Terry Daniher, Tim Watson

F: John Coleman, Matthew Lloyd, Albert Thurgood

Foll: Simon Madden, ■■■■ Reynolds(c), Bill Hutchison

Int: Mark Thompson, Jack Clarke, Mark Mecuri, Ken Fraser

Coach: Kevin Sheedy

Coleman has to be full forward ahead of Lloyd. The bloke who has league’s goal kicking medal named after him isn’t playing in the forward pocket.
