Here’s the team (really!)

Crowls.

If Hartley needs a rest at this stage, that would be a big concern imo. But I think it’s highly unlikely because:
(a) he’s named in the VFL and
(b) wasn’t he in the top 5 or 6 in the time trials?

I think the forwards will struggle, the same as in the NAB games. Maybe Joe will kick a couple but who else will step up. Stokes is the only other regular goal scorer. Jerrett I think kicked about seven last season, Langford, even less. The opposing coaches will soon work out that they only need to blanket Joe.I am surprised that they did not include Grimley.

Hmmm. Might just come down to matchups possibly?
Maybe Hartley needs more recovery time? He played all 3 NAB challenge games. Have him fresh for Rd 2.

Not sure you freshen players up in rd 1.
To think we recruited this guy when we thought we had Hooker and Hurley.

Interesting side. Woosha clearly picking his best 22 with a view to picking mature bodies to survive a game. Also seems an early message about horses for courses re Hartley. Brown clearly played his best footy in the NAB games in defence so I’m not surprised if he starts at chb.

Fantasia not playing at all this week so we wont know if form was an issue or not. He, Dempsey and Lav will offer useful depth pretty soon.

I think the side is a good blend of youngsters, mature listed players and top ups. You cant send Goddard, Zaha etc out every week with the expectation of getting belted and no hope. We need to be sustainably competitive. Sheer lack of familiarity with each other is the biggest issue imo, not outright talent. We need the core of this side to get a month of footy into them as a group.

I actually feel a bit disappointed...so few of our youngsters have actually shown enough in the preseason to stay ahead of the aging top-ups...

There’s three “aging top ups”: Kelly, Stokes and Crowley. Less than the number of first and second year players in the team.

Reckon we're a tall short

Quilt plays tall and actually is tall!

He plays tall. Is actually not.

He’s not tall. 188 cm. There are some players of that height who have successfully held down a key position (James Hird and Dermot Brereton spring to mind, and they were not even 188 cm), but they have been few and far between and have had exceptional ability. Gwilt is not that good. He’s 94 kg and so very solid. He’s capable of minding a third tall forward, but not a real key forward.

Beg to differ. I am 194cm tall and look him straight inthe eyes . Unless of course he wears high heels, because i dont. Ithink it may be the flat top.

I took the stats from Wikipedia. The EFC website is supposed to have player profiles on it but every time I look at it the page is blank. I found a site called footywire that also gives his height as 188. I was surprised myself that he was no taller than that. I would have thought 190, maybe 191, but 188 seems to be right.

The EFC website had Jobe go from 188cm to 194cm between one season(when Jobe was a bit heavier set and looked like more of a KF) and back down to 190cm the following year when he got in shape.
Take there measurements with a grain of salt!

Happy with the team except I’d have hartley instead of brown.

I just attempted and failed to find the Paddy Ambrose thread, it’s probably right under my nose but never mind, it’s kind of appropriate that our least fashionable soldier is sans thread. Don’t get me wrong I love the thrill of exciting debuts too and will be cheering on Walla and Parish. But I’ve got a soft spot for Paddy and I’m going to get in early and declare he’ll be a standout this year, wearing my support on my sleeve so the haters have clear sight when they line up to bag him for failing to single handedly stem the tide. I’m not saying he’ll replace Hurley but I reckon he has some similar attributes, he’s strong, aggressive, durable and he’ll bury his opponent if he gets half a chance. Marking’s not his strong suite but he’s a stopper now and Hurls wasn’t exactly Swan McKay either. And I reckon he’s a smart player too and I watched him leave his man at the right moment to intercept and spoil in the last 2 NAB games. I was rapt to see him selected and I reckon some of the younger blokes will be glad to see him running at their side. If the tide turns he won’t be found wanting. To quote Bomber Thompson, Padddy Ambrooose! (And if he gets beaten and the haters want to have a go at me for backing him here’s my prepackaged response , GFY!)

Maybe that one season was 2012 ???

Ambrose is a Mile off Hurley in agility and the ability to read the play.Strength, kicking distance/accuracy.

Only thing he’s got him covered for is running ability.

Don’t get me wrong, I want Paddy to smash it, but Hurley was/is on the cusp of being in the top tier of defenders in the comp.

Paddys first game in that position is tomorrow!

Don’t bother with the search function here, it’s less than Vanilla … it’s useless.

Do a Google thus …

And you’ll find it …

Edit: And I’m right beside you re: Ambo, the marking thing though, I expect will improve 100 - 200%, as he had a stuffed shoulder, now repaired, and sans pressure of “having” to mark as a fwd, with the main purpose of negating, rather than taking, it will come a lot easier.

We saw a similar problem resolved with Hooker & Hurls, and many others over the journey, … a good stint in the backline, after not handling expectations as a fwd, can often lead to a stunning return to the front half, with the confidence sorted.

there is no cusp.

Wow we’re playing tomorrow??!

Wow we're playing tomorrow??!
Tippa is, that's all you need to know
Probably the last time we had 12 banned.

Equals St.Kilda’s record when they had a player strike in 1911.
