English and German have similar sounds (at least that’s what I picked up in my one year at school). It’s not surprising that they speak it more than say the French, and definitely Italians.

Have you been to germany? My wife worked in germany for a year in Hanover, and we came across maybe 10 percent of the town could speak English, so getting groceries and various things in the day to day was quite challenging. I speak some Dutch which is very similar so I was ok but she really struggled.

No, can't say I have. But my experience is 90% with people around my age though, 20s-30s, couple who I was reasonably close mates with at Uni. Both reckon everyone speaka da english.
