Interviews with past players

I was fortunate enough to spend some time with some very fine individuals yesterday, all of whom are stalwarts of BB, two of them Mods. Much of the conversation centred on the more controversial threads that have appeared here in the past and the assorted trouble-makers, characters, nutters and sundry others who have contributed over the years. As a relative newbie I was all ears. I’m hoping that some of the funnier threads might even be excavated from the archives and reposted occasionally in a “Best of Blitz” section, but then again maybe the Mods have actual lives outside of this place so I won’t hold my breath.

Koala, a walking encyclopaedia on all things Blitz, told me that player interviews used to make their way into these pages, but that - understandably, I suppose - the club is a little more controlling now. It got me thinking however. How great it would be to hear from some of the past players? I love modern footy and reckon any team today would completely destroy a team from my childhood, but let’s face it, footy was a lot fruitier back in the 70s and 80s and it’d be great to hear again from the guys who knew what it was like to front up and play with a throbbing hangover, and maybe still a wee bit ■■■■■■.

I’d be happy to get the ball rolling. If there’s enough interest here and the club’s ok with it I’d leave my details at EFC as an open invitation for past players to get in touch and organise a catch up, either face to face or via email/chat. I’d then post the interviews. Given that a number of former players now live outside Victoria I’d be looking for help from interstate Blitzers as well.

Just running this up the flagpole at the moment. Your thoughts? Who would you interview if you could, and what would you ask him?

I think it’s an awesome idea.

I would love to hear what guys like moorcroft and Barnard are up to these days. Two of my favourite players.

Alec Epis please, for some much needed colour.

it would be great if we could dig up the old interviews and keep links to them in this section somewhere. Then we could add any new ones!

EDIT - found this one!

Koala, how could I ever compete with questions like ..... Why are Israel and Lebanon at war with each other? Is time cyclical or linear? Are LG messing with the fabric of space and time by creating a mobile phone that can transport the user to the 1920s?

Brilliant stuff.

Thanks for the support. The suggestions so far - Moorcroft, Barnard, Mitchell, Epis are all excellent choices. I'd love to know what was going through Slash's mind at half time in that Doggies game when he already had 5 goals and the Mark Of the Century under his belt.

Thanks also for the private message suggesting the possibility of an intro to a potential interviewee. I'll be in touch. And I'll keep an eye on this thread in case anyone else comes up with ideas. In the meantime I'll contact the club and see if they'll support it. The project might best be run over the off-season, what with the Dons about to enter a successful finals campaign and the Saga about to wind up (with unconditional apologies to Jimmy and co of course). I envisage/hope that the club keeps in touch with past players - an email? a regular newsletter? - which would no doubt provide a means of getting the idea out there.

I love the idea HH!

If it is possible, just off the top of my head, I wouldn't mind hearing what Billy Duckworth has been up to since the 1985 GF. He was always one of my favourites.

here are some more :)

He also said Courtney Johns could play 200 games for Essendon

Just thoroughly enjoying going through all these old interviews...thanks for posting them Koala :)

there are still a heap more - I'll have another search on the weekend!

I'll save you the trouble for some of them...I was sure you did one with Andrew Lovett but I can't find it, at least via the generic way. Thought there were interviews with Mark Johnson and Justin Blumfield (after he came back to the club to play with Bendigo) too.

I'd completely forgotten Awesome Scotty had interviewed all those draftees in 2007, although I do distinctly arriving in Perth with him in 2008 coincidentally just when the Freo players were arriving at the airport for their flight out to Sydney...for some reason he still had Rhys Palmer's number in his phone so Rhys endured an amusing 5mins of AS pranking him.

Who did the interviews as there is no name attached?

Alec Epis please, for some much needed colour.

FYI - he is on Open Mike this week with Mike Sheahan. I hope you can access it CJ.

Who did the interviews as there is no name attached?

Koala did most, if not all of them (sometimes with assistants). I'm not sure about the Cherry & Costello ones as they were released unattributed as Special Editions of the then monthly Blitz newsletter so Awesome Scotty may've conducted those.

Here is an interesting interview with John Barnes.  Genius Sheeds got him into the side in 2000 to boost our ruck stocks.

The fascinating fact in this interview is arguably the reason why we lost the back to backs in 2000/2001   Brisbane were a good side NO Doubt,  but injuries nobbled Essendon.  ( I dont know what Brisbanes injuries were)
