Is Pearl Jam Underrated?

I mentioned I read “High Fidelity” in the book thread, I think its a book The Ant could relate to :stuck_out_tongue:

I nearly spat chips when I heard SuperUnknown. I thought how could they.

How could they what?

Listen to the brutal Badmotorfinger and you will get my drift.

Sal hit it though.

And yeah i understand the reference Bomber Girl. It is a bit like that.

To be honest, I must say I bought Superunknown during my discovering the likes of Nirvana phase and was actually a bit disappointed.

Sorry, I'm not sure what your point is. Is it that they sold out? Superunknown is the more adventurous and mature album IMO.

As a Soundgarden fan from Loud Love, Superunkown was a superb progression in musicianship and songwriting, and to me is the highlight of their career. I'm glad they didn't make a BadMotorFinger 2, in the same way I'm glad they didn't make a Loud Love 2.

STP being one of them. They were playing funk in 1990.

Anyways.

I agree in part. But 1990-1995 was so unique.

Music shifted so suddenly. So quickly and so dramatically.

When Nirvana was in the top 10 so was Michael and Janet Jackson Billy Ocean.
Nirvana were the only Alt band in the top 40!

Triple M was scrambling. The latest single from Bon Jovi or Poison didn't cut it anymore with the kids.

There was a clear divide. No in between. Triple M retreated. And it nearly cost them.

Triple J and Triple R hadn't changed. The environment had.

Triple J/R didn't change cos it was popular. They continued on the way. They wanted to be popular. They were all of a sudden making money and influencing. Think of the crew that came out of Triple R in the early 90s.

Triple M changed because they were going to die and they had an in. By 95 Nirvana/PJ/Live/STP/Garbage were staples.
People that had gone to Triple J or R because who didn't want to listen to 80s rock could all of a sudden move back to Triple M because they had made the transition.

Pretty sure bonjovi had a huge #1 hit with Always in 1993?
But yeah it was a ballad that appealed to the masses not the cool kids, and it was on a best of album so they weren't exactly peaking.
In my country town I was very grunge and alternative with my undercut and docs and my short sleave nirvana shirt over my long sleave shirt, but nirvana, pumpkins, pj went on to be huge,y mainstream which I didn't mind because it meant they toured more and got more airplay...
I guess the question regarding PJ is are they still relevant or are they just touring for people who want to reminisce?

I guess it is one of those things where bands you have followed become huge.

It's weird. I dunno.

Should be happy that a wider audience was listening to them. Listening back it is an epic Album but at the time it was just weird hearing them on Triple M and all that. I only really realised how good that album was when i saw Soundgarden last year and Chris Cornell solo.

Perhaps it is an ownership thing. I should be be happy they are listening to that than anything else.

I remember when I saw GNR in 88 and then again in 94 i think. When they played November Rain someone yelled out "This is what we came for". I was thinking. No we haven't. We wish this song never existed.

Anyways this has been therapy for me. Appreciate you guys operating on the chip on my shoulder.

But I stand by that STP are well overrated!

You've picked up another very good point.

I reckon they are touring because they are still very good live and still love it and this is reflected in there performance. Also the new songs play well live.

When you go and see AC DC now they are playing the same set as the Who MAde Who tour or the Black ICE tour with 3 songs plugged into the set from their latest album.

I was watching the Pixies a couple of years ago (I saw them way back when) and it took me a couple of songs to figure out if they are real or they going through the motions. And they were real and it was fantastic.

Same with Soundgarden. They made me feel relevant and alive.

When I saw STP i wanted to shrivel up and die of old age.

I personally think Stone Temple Pilots are under rated. Thoughts anyone?

Well, I ...

For what it’s worth, I’m with Ant on this 99%, my recollection and perception of the events around that time are eerily similar. Not to add fuel to the fire, I thought silver chair were a bit of a sham too, but hey, there was other bands to go see.

Don’t think you can blame the bands though, once you sign to a major label you are fubar. Happened to Hendrix, James brown from memory, heck even big names like George Michael and Prince got screwed (insert pun).

Anyway, Fwiw I saw mudhoney last week, who I don’t think any of you guys have mentioned, and should be held in regard if only for their influence. for the umpteenth time, they were awesome, and you’d swear it was 1989 all over again.

Did you go to BDO 93?

Mudhoney Mudfight?

Epic.

Yes, BDO in 93. For my own personal musical preferences it was a jaw dropping lineup, that was just good times to be bad by everyone

Imagine if you bought a Soundwave ticket primarily to see STP.

and then believed the first story they told as to why they cancelled.

Lots of bands have been mentioned in this thread but I must admit I am a bit surprised that there appears to be no love for Dinosaur Jr.

It was them and Screaming Trees that first took my attention...before Nirvana or Pearl Jam etc

Throw in sonic youth, cosmic psychos...there's plenty of bands that paved the way

D Jr ? Not really.

I just found J Mascis' voice irksome.

Sonic Youth yep, & that Takes me to L7 & Hole.

For all the supposed crap she caused, & even if Kurt did write it/them? The 1st 2 albums of theirs got a good run here.

& If we're talking girls of the 90's, The Breeders 1st 2 will always get played, Pod especially.

I like a few Sonic Youth songs, but ■■■■■■ hell are they over-rated.

Green river -> mudhoney

But who can go last Hendrix for the one who started it all, local boy who knew how to play a tune sing badly and shake the establishment up a little

Their legacy was far superior than their actual music.
