Essendon was belted in contested possession in the second half of last season, ranking 18th in this area from Round 15 onwards according to Champion Data.The Bombers averaged 17 contested possessions a game less than their opponent during this stretch, well behind 17th-ranked Sydney Swans (-10 a game).
But it is hoped Townsend can play an important defensive midfield role at Tullamarine and help boost the Bombers’ in the clinches.
Essendon also rookie-listed former Kangaroo Mitchell Hibberd last week after an excellent season as an inside midfielder at Williamstown in the VFL.

Townsend, 26, will rejoin forces with Essendon senior coach-in-waiting Ben Rutten after playing under the former Richmond assistant at Tigerland.
Importantly, Townsend and Hibberd can take some of the load off and help release star playmakers Dylan Shiel, Zach Merrett, Andrew McGrath and captain Dyson Heppell who is coming off surgery to help fix a serious foot problem.
Townsend was used largely as a pressure forward in his four years at Richmond, slotting 28 goals over 20 games in four seasons there.
But his talks with the Bombers have revolved around a chance to return to the engine room after starting his career under Essendon legend Kevin Sheedy at Greater Western Sydney in 2012.

I don’t think all of Townsend, hibberd and cutler will be best 22 week in, week out straight away, but I reckon all can play a role throughout the year and give our midfield a different look, and we needed to do that.

Indeed. Every year a number of players drop off and can’t keep their spot - so there’ll be opportunities for these guys and the next tier to make a case to be selected. That combined with tweaks to the gameplan will provide opportunities for changes.
Def not all 3. But can easily see Cutler on the wing and one of Hibberd/Townsend as the main inside mid.
I know in 2018 we preferred to have Myers do the heavy lifting to allow Hep to not get so beaten up/more freedom for playmaking. Which is probably what we’d like to see happen for Shiel also.
Problem with Myers (aside from falling off a cliff in 2019) is he offered next to nothing tackling wise and was burnt off by opponent too easy. Both Hibberd and Townsend tackling machines and Hibberd would be up there with Ambrose as our best runner I’d reckon, often winning North’s time trials. That might tip it in his favour.

Hibberd can take Langfords spot as for Cutler and Townsend I’m not sure
All three of Cutler, Hibberd and Townsend seem to be role players.
Not necessarily match-winners, but guys we are thinking (hoping) can be relied upon to do specific work such as gut-running, upping the defensive pressure or winning the hard ball in traffic.
I genuinely don’t know if it’s going to work, but I think I see part of the strategy behind it. And not surprisingly, it looks like we might be borrowing a bit of IP from the Tigers on this front.

At the very least, the addition of those 3 guys should bring a harder edge to training. Even if none of them end up best 22, hopefully that difference in training helps the team
