Jacob Townsend

anyway, if we list him, so be it. hopefully he adds something, somewhere, to what we’re doing.

Can’t kick. IMO.
Has always been able to find the ball and win it.

If you are in a bottoming out rabble situation, lacking any sort of list structure, certainly bring in role players as anchor points for young talent. If you have been losing preliminary finals by small margins due to a lack of a specific type of player, bring in role players to fill those gaps of course. If you are a mid table lock that can’t move up, the problem almost certainly isn’t a lack of role playing journeymen.

Townsend has shown he can be more than an average footballer. I’m guessing the coaches think they can bring that out.

No idea tbh

But I would rather have Townsend in the squad than brown every day of the week

The 1 AFL game he played, he had 3 touches and 3 free kicks against

I think that sorta sealed it.

Comparing to Brown irrelevant really.

It’s more what they offer for their relative positions.

Brown was depth as a kpf/kpd, mainly playing more fwd for us over past few years. But against the top sides he couldn’t take marks or provide strong enough contest which we need. It’s a vital part. And as we saw with Tigers if you weren’t up to it as a kpf they simply preferred to play small.

He’d have been well back in the queue for us and in turning 30 next year was time to cut him as wouldn’t be useful depth.

Townsend however seemingly offers exactly what they want in trying to get a forward half game going with unwavering defensive intent. And he would probably jump the queue of a lot of our depth fwd options and be useful depth.

Is Townsend technically a ranga?

Won’t somebody please think of the children

Yep

But put yourself into the shoes of those who’ve spent 2-3 years bemoaning Worsfold and our journeymen/role players, and now being all-in on Rutten/Cara as messiahs.

What are you going to do?

A beautiful example of cognitive dissonance. We have always been at war with Eastasia. We’ve always needed a 27yo journeyman defensive forward.

The more I think about this the more undecided I am.

On the one hand I agree with Sal, roll the dice and try to uncover some genuine best 22 players.

On the other hand forget about Brown, it’s more if Lav and Begs don’t make it and Raz goes home. We have some real depth problems up forward.

Strip the “richmond” and “Cara” away from it.

In black and white: would anybody ever suggest recruiting a 27yo journeyman defensive forward who’s kicked 32 goals in 48 games across 8 years?

Heck no.

I do see people’s points on just taking risks on unknowns in the hope of a Stack/Snelling. But as we saw from the mid season/early season drafts most actually didnt contribute much at all.

The odds are not in clubs favour

Fair chance that clubs will take more risks in the ND now with Stack/Pickett types that they might have been averse to previously given what Tigers did

I agree.

But it scares me more what that means for the forwards we have. The depth is rated that bad and young talent discounted because we need Townsend. Gulp.

The trouble with the majority of blitz every player has to kick 5 goals have 6 score assists 30 touches every game otherwise they are no good.

its what you do with out the ball that is more important not too mention being soft as butter for far too long

i dont want nice young men who could be future leaders lets get footballers first!

m brown was finished as a player until the saga so ive always thought of him as a claytons player!

With Richardson, Caracella, Sheedy and Truck all having involvements with him. You cant say that we dont know what we are in for.

But at least Sheedy picks are now Rookie selections / 4th round picks

We have lost good football people - Dea/Myers/Brown/Hartley/Baguley

If we get one back who can play for a couple of years, its most l;ikely a good thing. cost us nothing.

He must have good character, to be recommeneded by these guys.

And if he put pressure on the best 22 and can also deliver us a VFL premiership I will be happy.

Hard as a cat’s head is Townsend, and we lack players like that play with a bit of grunt. But I don’t think his effort makes up for his lack of ability. There’s a good reason why he has played mainly twos over his career and why is available as a delisted free agents.

Maybe the coaches think he would go some way to correcting a cultural issue at the club. I think the perception of our club as a soft front-runner is correct. But he’s a stop gap only and in my opinion unlikely to become a senior regular. Would rather roll the dice on an unknown quantity with more upside.

Well, right now, sure.

Has the draft been cancelled?

Has the club actually drafted the guy yet, or are they just sussing out the possibility??

Supposedly toured the club.
Hopefully VFL captain.
