Melk butchered it last night, I think there were 4-5 instances under little or no pressure he kicked it straight to a Dees defender inside our F50. Just not good enough. I'm not going to pin the loss just on that alone, and it's unfair to make one guy a scapegoat, but we can't accept that. As Bomber said in the post-game presser, we went away from the game style after the first quarter or so. That happens from time to time, but the good teams can sense this, the leaders then address it in-game. We didn't, and that shows the gulf in real leadership among the guys. Miussing Jobe is no excuse, there are enough experienced AFL players in that team to be able to set the standard and also pull others up if they aren't meeting their expectations.
One of the few players who was actually trying to kick bullet passes into the forward 50 instead of high bombs. If a few of those kicks were 30cm higher it would be another story on here. Sure Jake had a pretty average game, but so did a lot of others. I still expect him to prove the doubters wrong.

He seemed to kick it over TBC head alot so I think he should have been kicking it 30cm lower
Career killing season. Lucky he signed that 2 year contract after his 10 weeks of competence.
Fixed. Seriously, his form in the back half of last season has been massively exaggerated here.
Nah it was good. Very good.
It was solid and deserving of a spot in the team, but nothing more.
Haha agree with this, you would think his form late last season was on brownlow medal pace the way people are talking on here. His average posessions were in the low 20's. Id say if anything his performances were on par for what would be expected from someone at his stage of career. The perception of how good he was going was amplified with the majority of the team being rubbish late in the year.
Give O'Brien a chance, at least he can get the ball, actually i'd even prefer colyer at least he has pace.
Will bounce back.
Can play, some of those kicks thou werent great...Probs could do with a run in the magoos
I said it during 2012 and I say it again.
Essendon football club jumpers should NEVER be gifted to players because "he has potential".
Essendon football club jumpers should be EARNED, every single time, bar none.
Gifting players games creates laziness and a sense of entitlement (Neagle).
We've been gifting Melksham games for more than two years now. I don't hate him, I still think he can become a serviceable footballer.
But treating him as above judgement is ridiculous. For God's sake drop him.
Btw his last half of 2013 has been wildly exaggerated on BB (who would've thought). He played some good games where he stood up, and a couple of times kicked three goals including some from outside 50 (although even one of those, he ignored Hocking to kick a goal from 55).
He was good but nowhere near great. It frightens me how low our standards of judgement have dropped that some thought he was going to be a star. He's at times looked like he might be average/good.
the longer this thread goes on, the more people work themselves into a frenzy. Everyone feels the need to rehash whats already been said.
I dont have so much of a problem with gifting games to young kids to get them experience eg joe.I said it during 2012 and I say it again.

I do have a massive problem with gifting games to people who have been around for a few years and still haven't come along that much, and then don't reward that gifting with decent form.
There is only so long you can drag someone along hoping they find form. Dropping him seemed to work last year, do it again.
They have no issue dropping Howlett, why is this guy always safe?

I don't think Joe is being "gifted" games though, because he performs at least at an average level (and often above, especially if you take into account our woeful delivery to him).

I was using him as more of an example, of a talented kid that is just starting his career out a future champ that just needs games into him no matter what. I think joe has earned every one of his games tbh, he was the first kid that came to mind
He'll get dropped this week. They have no issue dropping Howlett, why is this guy always safe?
Not sure why everybody is getting their knickers in a knot.
No way any coach keeps a guy in the side off the back of that game. No way.

Not the first time he has played like that though, and he wasn't dropped then either.

A bit silly to suggest anyone is gifted a game with the Bombers. I remember back in the day when we all said that Kevin Walsh was Sheed's ■■■■■■■ son and that is why he got a game, but he kept playing OK and proved us all wrong. And Neagle is a great case of wasted talent; he had the ability but not the application.
Jake Melksham may be over-rated but in my humble view, he is often played out of position. Should never be in the backline, should always be in the middle and he does have class and can play. Those kicks into the forward line were good kicks, but without any function up forward it is a bit tough. He is definitely in our best 22 and he is still young and yet to play 100 games, so wait until next year before you can him completely.

I reckon he must have pictures

He kicked bullets when our forwards were playing behind and asking it to be kicked high and long.
He kicked floaters when our forwards were on the lead and asking for it to be kicked low and hard.
He was abhorrent.
Jake did play much better footy in last year and deserved his spot as a result. I don't think Jake is an elite footballer, but definitely a great contributer and backup for our mids. I think playing with confidence he will also win the odd game for us.
To get him there, however, takes leaving him in the middle and accepting he is going to make some (and maybe many) clangers before his touch and then confidence returns to finally deliver what he did. He really did play well under Jimmy who I think really backed him to play him and not drop him while he developed - which would've been a huge confidence boost in itself.

Can't afford that, not after 80-odd games.
