We did.

But our board is incredibly weak, just about the worst in the entire league and we don’t have a strong visionary CEO to lead the club forward.

Geelong has had incredibly strong leadership everywhere for over 20 years. Same at the Hawks, Same at Sydney. Same at the Pies. Tigers got it all right under Gale and O’Neill.

We have…who by comparison?

Hisgrove and barham? Nepo baby welsh? The lesser Scott brother?

President - CEO - Coach - Footy Boss - List Manager are the 5 roles that absolutely, unequivocally have to be spot on and working like a well-oiled machine and there is no margin for error if we want everything else to improve at a rate of knots.

I think (although its yet to actually be proven) most people would feel like we maybe have one of those right in Rosa.

And it is a conundrum because every time we throw it out and start again and get it wrong, we cost ourselves probably 3-5 years progress, minimum.

Personally, I don’t think the Essendon has anywhere near enough high quality people off-field.

Choco is a genuine prick of a bloke, but he has a very good football mind and grew up in football royalty surrounded by almost constant success.

Is he still in the coaching headspace or purely the director type roles these days?

Everyone has to be on the same page and understand that the absolute worst thing we can do is fail to realise where we are at and what is actually required for the umpteenth time.

Have we reached rock bottom yet, or can things possibly get worse? Not from a W/L perspective but from a cultural focus. The fabric of the club is not so much torn right now, as it is completely shredded.

The reported challenges at the club over the past decade have been interference from board, coterie’s, whoever. The only time in the last 2 decades that it looked like we had someone that had far more pull over any cotorie or board member was Hird. Potentially having someone that all of those outside influences admire is the key. They did all listen to him, for good or for bad. Hird had the keys to the club and was the only one to make change. Whether that’s good or bad is another thing

FWIW, I don’t want him to be Scott’s replacement.
I’m more than happy for him to be involved with the club in some capacity, but he hasn’t spent the last ten years improving his football knowledge and he could have. I think he was better equipped the first time than he is now.
I think he could/can coach.
I don’t think he’s anywhere near the best option for that role at the moment.
