Seems low. Might want to re-check those calculations?
Well said. I don’t disagree with any of that
If he had even tried to improve his skillset in coaching since he resigned, I could understand wanting to try it again. But he has done almost nothing
Is this thread active again because Glenn Jakovich said that we were looking to bring him back to the club? Or has something else happened?
I think it’s mostly active because I’m feeling pretty friggin’ grumpy.
Watching hird on 9 this year, I’ve been impressed by his charismatic side, humor and likeability. Initially I was impressed by his footy analysis, but as the years warn on, it seems basic for a head coach. Particularly when sitting beside bartel, who outshines him in tactical knowledge of the game.
That’s absolutely fair!
Agreed.
If he does come back to the club, I really wouldn’t want his coaching commitments to get in the way of his onfield performance.
Remember 2013, 13 wins from 16 and then the AFLPA told the players Demetriou was going to kick them out of the finals
To be 100% accurate here, the club hierarchy accepted a deal from the Demetriou and the AFL that would result in the players being kicked out of the finals.
with the understanding that the players wouldn’t be further…
…Actually there’s another thread for this.
people that get lengthy suspensions keep getting second chances here
Because he is incredibly handsome for someone with such big ears.
And he has Aura.
I know this has absolutely zero chance of happening.
But what I believe would be the best for the club, is if Hird came out publicly backing our current coach, came on board as an assistant or development coach. Clearly stating he will not replace Brad Scott if he gets fired.
It would single handedly unite all the factions of the Essendon football club whilst providing stability.
Like Merrett did 8 weeks ago?
Unfortunately publicly backing someone doesn’t mean a lot these days.
…
(Having said that I would vote for Heppell as PM)
I’ve never been hot on the idea that a Hird return is a good thing.
But seeing how deplorably bad this club is being run when it’s not a boys club?
Hell, if we’re going to be shithouse, lets do it as an Essendon boys club FFS. Was the last time we looked half decent anyway.
It would also be a mighty “■■■■ you” to the AFL and the media as well.
If Scott had some balls I’d be having a coffee with James Hird this week and offering him an assistant role as bench coach. The guy has charisma, connects with players and knows football. I didn’t see Scott on the bench once this year. It’s something I think was severely lacking, especially with the younger players.
A combined effort to achieve success. I’d like to see that.
What’s the salary of an Assistant Coach - $180 - 200 K plus? Hird’s investment business would no doubt be earning him multiple times that level.
Doubt it would be worthwhile Jimmy looking for a career change on those sort of numbers!!
Get real folks!
I don’t think Hird can be an assistant coach at Essendon. Too destabilising, not through any fault of his own.
Regardless of his intentions, he’d be a gun aimed at the back of the head of the actual coach the entire time he was there. A few losses in a row, and people would start rumbling and white-anting, knowing that they have a fairytale wishlist successor right there…
Which is a shame. I genuinely rate his coaching ability (with the caveat that he’s probably years out of date tactically, and that he never seemed to believe that rucks matter) and I think he’d have something genuinely to offer in the player development role, or VFL coaching, or many similar non-senior-coach-roles. I just don’t think it’s plausible.
Oh yes he is, and will be more so now Merrett is leaving
Brad to get knifed in the back before the mid season bye then install Hird as coach.
Our dumb club would do this
