James Hird — January 2017 onwards (Part 1)

And unfortunately this question is relevant, to discussion about MOST board members and/or candidates we’ve seen for as long as I can remember.

Even I cannot disagree with that. And that Government ties funding to obeying WADA.

there was also total lack of governance from Board and Management.

Great post.

Boards do governance, management manages. That has always got me. The four sanctioned by the AFL for governance failures were not part of the club’s governance structure.

His response was very wishy washy. Please come back and coach us Jimmy!

Creating governance systems is a part of management – boards provide oversight of the outputs of those systems (e.g., a company’s Compliance department focuses on governance systems without being a part of the board). Boards have a duty to ensure that an organization has adequate controls in place to support whatever initiatives they want to carry out, but management ultimately designs, implements and oversees those controls. At Essendon, governance systems clearly failed, which is on management, but it’s hard to argue that there was strong oversight on the board’s part either.

Think at the time Paul Brasher was the Board person in charge of the Governance Committee. He really farked it up.

Paul was the Finance Director at the time. My recollection is that they broadened the scope of the Governance Committee after the saga, and up to that point it had been primarily financially focused. I’d wonder how many boards even today are well positioned to mitigate risk in high performance departments…

Yep that is true, but he was chair of the Finance, Risk, Integrity & Governance Committee

For those claiming that Hird is destined to be a failure as a head coach, I suggest you look at the current Brisbane coach as a comparison.

How are they similar?

Fagan, who never played at AFL level, but was an assistant coach for 17 years before he became a senior coach?

I couldn’t think of two more opposite coaching candidates.

Fagan played state footy, coached state footy, then did really long assistant roles at Melbourne and Hawthorn before landing a senior gig.

Hird was shoehorned into a senior coaching role because he was a champion at AFL level, then has done a few months at GWS and some oversight role at VFL level.

“following a tumultuous off-season”…?

FFS. That off season went quick! Seems like only a couple of weks ago since we last lost.

He also has more experience in doing racisms, allegedly.

He was someone who was a most unlikely candidate at the time due to his history and age but nevertheless has turned out to be a great success.

Just shows that there is little utility in rejecting someone because they do not fit into a predetermined selection criteria imposed by so called experts.

But on the flip side, didn’t play a part in getting 34 of his players banned from the game. Which is handy.

I love your work :innocent:

That’s a stretch.

Yea he was an unlikely candidate, but he met their selection criteria set by so called experts and had been in the system non-stop for 20 years, so his resume was significantly more compelling.

Hird hasn’t done anything for a decade.

Probably true but he was a most unlikely head coaching candidate and succeeded, whereas many of the certs flop.
