If he is playing the percentages and executing like he should throughout the game then the fence sit gets laughed off as in reality it was nothing
But the attempted set shot snap from 45m out that didn’t even score and the missed easy set shots from close in, and even the one in last quarter 30 out on more of an angle when we needed him to kick it and were pressing. Even 2 of those 4 set shots would have been really helpful. Gets the boys excited, rewards all their hard work up field, builds pressure back onto WC. But he goes 0-4, and all were gettable.
He can sit on fences and joke around all he likes when getting the job done IMO, but when he’s not it just looks really poor and obviously grinds peoples gears especially when we lose
I couldn’t care less who sat on the fence. the game needs more characters
id have a problem with it if it actually affected a play, or it was while the game was actually in motion. as others have pointed out, by the time tippa kicked it, he was standing near the line.
the overreaction from fans and commentators is bizarre, imo
Joe was about 2 metres behind the line as the ball sailed over his head.
The disciplined thing to do was be in a position to contest a kick that fell short, irrespective of how good a kick Tippa is. Once the job is done, go for it and do all the Joe stuff.
I would have thought somewhere in the goal square taking up a position in front of his opponent before Tippa kicks.
The kick was from 49, so it could have fallen well short.
I saw Longy fall on his ■■■■ one day just as he kicked it. Barely made 25 metres
Shot was well within wallas distance, joe could have made a run at the ball if needed from where he stood and it didnt matter because as expected it went right over his head. (with every essendon player on the ground knowing Wallas range)
Never also mind that Walla is our best set shot from goal and having him off load it to another player inside 50 is madness in itself.
Joe should have been in the goal square as Tippa was lining up, not on the fence.
Attention to detail wins flags.
You’ll note the Eagles player stick right next to Joe.
But for a player like Joe surely being behind the goal line is a better option than being in the goal square, so he can get a run at it if it looks like falling short, as opposed to having to jump from a standing start if he’s in the square.
I’m sure this is what what @Deckham was saying but you seem to have misunderstood
firstly you’ve confused being able to play football as being a “professional” afl footballer, there’s a very vast difference between the two.
Secondly he didnt’ kick those goals, and he never gave off the impression he was going to, infact he came across as scared to have the shots cos he had no faith in his ability to have a set shot.
thirdly, even if he did kick those goals, it’d only be the sycophants praising him in a hope he “falls back inlove” with the club so he stays.
The simple fact is, if he’d gone to sydney last year, i’m betting the narrative around his actions would be polar opposite than it has been.
mediocre, delusional, happy to be mediocre mentality.
