Are you talking about Hird circa 1999?

That’s probably because after numerous takes, Sean Murphy couldn’t say it with a straight face

please don’t compare heppell to hird

So much irony in Whinesockboys posts.

All he does is complain.

Dyson Heppell needs to be seen as a bonus if he’s fit, because I’m not expecting much from him. As wob said, been a great servant and briefly looked like becoming a great player around 2014, however injuries and missing a year of his prime in 2016 have done him in. This club can’t afford a part-time player as a captain. If Rutten has some ruthlessness about him he will make that decision himself to take the captaincy off him and give it to Pidge. It shouldn’t be a peer voted popularity contest…

I don’t think people after all these years, realise how sarcastic I am

for the record, I think/hope heppell will be ready within the first week or two.

i do however have realistic expectations of what he will produce, and personally i dont see him as a important cog in the team. we need his leadership more than we need his skills, imo

Of course not. But Hird was finished in 1999 at age 26. Everyone knew it. He knew it, that’s why he was in tears on the bench.

And then we got 7 more years out of him at a very high level. Was he the same player? I say no, but he was still exceptional, just in a different way.

Heppell can absolutely adapt and come back and give us quality football.

You are right until proven otherwise.

If you aren’t cooked Heppell, prove it.

I think if he becomes a honest, serviceable player then it’s a win. when he was in his prime, he was our best midfielder. now he’s not even in our most important 3-4 mids and like I said, the saga and injury have robbed him of his absolute prime years

At this time of year when the club is selling memberships, they are never going to reveal the full extent of their injury list. Just enough to let us think they are keeping us fully informed.

It’s not Tom Browne.

I think he’s had 2 seasons ruined by a buggered foot/ankle, and if our questionable medical department can get it right this time then he’ll go back to being way better than serviceable. He’s only 28.

Injury update: February 9

The latest on Michael Hurley, Jake Stringer, Dyson Heppell and more.

Essendon star Michael Hurley has been discharged from hospital with the 30-year-old being monitored after sustaining an infection in his right leg last week.

General manager, football Josh Mahoney said the defender would be recuperating away from the club for another week but was expected to make a full recovery.

“The doctors had to assess his response to the antibiotics but pleasingly Michael has been discharged from hospital in recent days and is likely to be recovering from the infection for another week away from the club,” Mahoney said.

“It is too early to put a timeframe on when he will return to the club for training duties, and we will take a conservative approach on his return and wait and see how he recovers from the infection.”

Lively forward Jake Stringer was also sent for scans late last week, with the 26-year-old managing an Achilles injury during pre-season.

“Jake presented with some soreness in his Achilles area last week, which is something our high performance team have been managing diligently this pre-season,” Mahoney said.

“He will continue to build his loads from next week onwards and we’re confident he will integrate back into full training over the coming weeks.”

Meanwhile, captain Dyson Heppell is “tracking really well” as he continues a full training program after overcoming a foot injury.

“Dyson has been training really well and we’re really pleased with how he is progressing from that foot injury. He is a true professional and has put in a huge amount of work this pre-season to ensure his body feels good, so we’re pleased with his progression to date this pre-season," Mahoney said.

Mahoney said veteran David Zaharakis was continuing to progress in his recovery from PCL surgery.

“David is making good progress and getting in a lot more strength work at the moment. He will continue to build up his training before we ramp up his loads on the training track," he said.

Defender Patrick Ambrose continues his recovery from a Lisfranc injury, with Mahoney saying the 29-year-old hadn’t progressed as quickly as the club would have hoped.

“We’ve been monitoring Patty closely and in recent weeks he probably hasn’t progressed as quickly, so we will continue to monitor his progressions over the next couple of weeks," he said.

After an injury-interrupted first season with the Bombers, exciting prospect Harrison Jones has completed a full pre-season to date, overcoming a stress fracture in his foot sustained during the 2020 shutdown period.

“We’ve been able to get some really good loads in with Harrison this pre-season and he is really impressing on the training track,” Mahoney said.

“He’s put on some size to his body, too, and has to date completed a full pre-season of training, so we’re excited to see his development into the season ahead.”

What are we using on the grounds?

They should move the chain-wire fence further away from the ground, just to be safe. Keep the outsiders out.
