When i went to the club media day, we stayed behind a bit when all other media left, I noticed McGrath having a long meeting with about 10 first or second year players at the club and was firmly talking to them. They were hanging on his every word. Went on for sometime (at least 30 mins when i could see across the room) and it came across as a weekly type meeting Andy conducts as a leader
Just made me think then on what we don’t see behind four walls at the club.
I know we spend a fair bit of time rightfully bemoaning some of our early draft selections, but you’d be pretty happy drafting a Nic Martin with a top 10 pick. Bloke just seems like one of those absolute professionals in wanting to improve and now showing his leadership potential.
Clearly, different types of leadership and McGrath excels behind the scenes apparently.
Problem is, a leader must lead on field first and foremost and not buckle (panicked, blind kicks invariably leading to opposition goals, gifting them momentum or worse still, stifling whatever momentum Essendon are trying to exert) under pressure when leadership is most needed for a team trying to build credibility in the comp.
When he speaks to the microphone/camera it comes across as corporate coach speak, lacking credibility. Words and actions just don’t align and as a supporter, he does not inspire, he lacks presence.
Wasn’t sure if Redman would get in based on his form last year but ultimately happy with those selections and I think it was time to extend the leadership group.
Duursma, Caldwell & Durham should be next in line IMO.
