Len Cohen on James Hird: Famous Blond Scapegoat

So if there are any Cohen fans out there, here is my tribute to a giant of the club written during last week. Freshly knocked back by the Coodabeens, it runs to the tune and sentiment of Famous Blue Raincoat. Wonder if there are any other semi-musical efforts going around…

It’s August this morning but years from September
I’m writing you now just to see if you’re better
Napier Street’s cold, and some members are leaving
There’s music at Docklands now all through the evening.

Hadn’t we fortified our Little’s High
Performance Centre
Why fight 3 more battles now,
When I’m thinking we’ve just surrendered.

Yes, and James came by with a shake of his hair
He said that we all needed air
He said that the air should be clear
Will it ever be clear?

Ah, the last time we saw Jim he looked so much older
His famous blond tresses were oily, less golder
Was he aping the styles of the hacks at his digs
Had he seen too many lank horsehair wigs

And they treated our princeling to a black inky siege
When he came back he was nobody’s chief.

I recall James there with his helmet, head down
On his split skull it looked like a crown
If you hear James awake –

We send our regards.

And what can I tell Jim our brother, our killer
What can I possibly say?
“I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I’m still glad you stood in our way.”

If they ever come by here, for Jim’s family
Say the kids are now sleeping, and his Tania is free.

Yes, and Jim thanks, for the fire they took
From your eyes
I thought it was there for good
But I still know you tried.

And James came by with a shake of his hair
He said that we all needed air
He said that the air should be clear

Sincerely, S.N.Don

Greg Champion’s tribute/commentary song to Hird on Coodabeens yesterday to the tune of the Rolling Stones’ “Angie”. Very poignant.

Yes, the Coodabeens said they got about a dozen on the topic. Like the positivity near the end “we know you’ll be back some day”.

I’ll concede that I always admired Hird’s versatility as a player.

My user name is partly inspired by Leonard Cohen’s version (which I heard first) of Emmanuel D’Astier de la Vigerie and Anna Marly’s song “Partisan”.

“When they poured across the border
I was cautioned to surrender,
this I could not do…”

Plus being a one eyed red and black person probably contributed.

Nice one up up.

Like a Hird on the wire?
Don’t go home with your Hird on?
If it be your Will (Hams)?
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye (to Jake Carlisle)?

Sorry - they’re terrible!

I only know Nevermind from the True Detective opening credits.

There have been a lot of good things to come out of Canada but i think Leonard Cohen was probably the best. Nah… best hands down.

Eugenie Bouchard for me.

Hmmm

The Hirdisan (with abject apologies to Mr Cohen!)

When the AFL came calling
i was cautioned to start crawling
this i could not do
I took my sash, and donned it

I have been lied about so often
They have stalked my wife and children
But I have many friends
And some of them Stand By me

When the Gold Coast gave Dank shelter
It didn’t bother Barrett
When Weap worked for Geelong
Caro made not a whisper

The Board ‘supported’ me this morning
But I stand alone this evening
Still I must go on
NDAs are my prison

Hot air, hot air is blowing
From the Age, hot air is blowing
Someday the truth will come
But no-one will publish it

(verses from here on are a whole lot of french)

Brilliant stuff from you also HH.

These songs need to be kept for The Future.

groan RBP.

Hallelujah!! Someone got it.

I think lots of people got it, but didn’t say so. Everybody Knows that would just have encouraged you…

Fair enough. I get the hint.

Time to call Closing Time on these lame references.

HM this is sterling stuff. After the 1st verse and 2nd verse I felt like getting up and yelling “I am Hirdicus”. They way the 3rd and 4th twist the original wrods is inspired. That very last line is pretty grim though. Cohen ends the Partisan on a positive. Some achievement to be more downbeat than LC!

Neil Young easily.

Not even in the same discussion. And I don’t mind Neil Young at all. But he has to get past KD Lang and Brian Adams, then Leonard Cohen
