CHARITY AUCTION:
Rob Hirst/Midnight Oil 1979 Black Ludwig
Touring and Recording Drumkit

Sold/Auctioned by Matthew Yau on behalf of Rob Hirst

Rob Hirst is parting ways with a truly iconic piece of music history. Purchased new for the recording of Head Injuries, this Ludwig kit became the heartbeat of the Oils’ live shows — a centrepiece on stages across the world from 1979 right through to the band’s final tour in 2022.

Now, Rob is auctioning the kit with all proceeds donated to two causes close to his heart:

  • MusicNT’s “Fix-Em-Up Truck Campaign”, providing gear, repairs and support for remote musicians in the NT.
  • Support Act, the lifeline for Australian music workers in need.

The auction runs from today, Friday 3 Oct (6am) – Monday 13 Oct (9pm AEDT) and is open to everyone. The winning bidder covers courier costs, but walks away with nothing less than a living piece of Australian rock history.

Rob hopes this kit finds a home where it can continue to inspire — whether that’s a museum or a private collection. Either way, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own part of the Oils’ story.

Wow he sets his toms high. Are those all the same size?

Still using the old Speed King pedal!

Some pics from my last recording at Headgap Studios before it sadly burnt down earlier this year. Special place!

He’s got 2 x 14” mounted toms and a 13” I think it is. Plus 16/18” floor toms from memory.

What’s the kit there @crumbs?

Tama Star with standard sizing. Best kit i’ve owned…With my snare being from a US company called Joyful Noise.

Nice! I’ve got a beautiful Starclassic Maple in smaller sizes but it never sees the light of day.

Rush is touring next year with a new drummer, a German youtube sensation named Anika Nilles who played a bit with Jeff Beck. I spent all morning thinking I’d had a fever dream.

Anyone else follow the Drumeo channel?
I always love the vids where drummers come up for parts of songs they haven’t heard before.
This is my second favourite of those videos (behind Brann Drailor from Mastodon being stitched up and completely overplaying a song that actually had basically no drum line lol).

With the passing of Rob Hirst, a question was asked about ranking Australian drummers. Got me thinking that I can name about three. (Four if you include Darryl Somers). So: three.

Have at it: who are / were the gooduns?

I’d go with Kram, because I Farking love spiderbait. And whoever the drummers for Hoodoo gurus and Australian crawl are. Rob Hirst clearly at or near the top.

As I said, not many names spring to mind.

Crawl…the fabulous Mr John Watson.
Bill McDonough was first, but Watson was far better imo.
Steve Prestwich.

You’re right, though. Not a lot come to mind for me.

I mean, Chisel did have some driving percussion.

Gonna put in a plug for Carl Panuzzo of Checkerboard Lounge. Not purely for his drumming, but for his ability to sing like he does while doing it.

It is a skill that mystifies me.

I reckon all the nominations here are great but I’m going to also add Freddie Strauks , and anothe left field one is Graham Pogson from the bamboos , he fits his genre perfectly
