Interestingly, the ‘delisted’ players would slot in to the gaps in the VFL team this year pretty nicely… arguably a very well balanced list across positions this year.

It is early, but I’d say you’ve pushed Lual into the 22 early there.
More likely it will be a gap that is filled through free agency.
I also would be surprised if Guelfi is held on to just to play VFL.

Totally agree we lack star power but we’re moving towards a point where our role players are first rounders. We currently have 19 first round picks on the list. Stringer and Weed are the two I’d argue are most likely to be missing from that list next year (I think WEED has another years maybe) and will likely be replaced by a first and second round pick unless we can trade up to two first round picks (in a draft that’s apparently dominated by mids at the top end). I think if we can keep that balance of effectively half the list being first round picks, even if they’re discarded from other clubs because they’re just role players, we’re progressing. Picking absolute stars in the draft is a bit of a crap shoot, but it’s also the most economical for the list because it allows for better role players than coughing up for ludicrous trade scenarios.

Apologies if this has been explained already, but why are you saying we have 2 Cat ‘B’ rookie spots? Aren’t clubs allowed up to 6 Rookie ‘A’ spots, therefore we could choose to fill 2 more Rookie ‘A’ spots during the PSS or MSD (to reach list max 44)?

The only way you’d be allowed to have 6 Rookie A players would be if you intentionally only had 36 players on your main list. There is that flexibility there for clubs to do that. As long as when you add up the numbers on your main list and Rookie A list that it comes out at 42 then you’re sweet.

The rookie B spots are just like separate free hits. Of which you are allowed a max of 2 in each season.

Max of 42 main + rookie a list players allowed.
36-6
37-5
38-4

I don’t think that’s right? Isn’t the max list size 44, with Senior List between 36-38?

So current EFC list:

Total List Size (37-44): 42
Senior List (36-38) 38
Rookie A (0-6) 4
Rookie B (0-3) 0

So we have 2 Rookie List spots available

This is correct.

Therefore can add only 2 Cat B rookie’s now unless long term injury before March (knock on the biggest piece of wood I can find!)

Ok, I read an AFL article saying list size was 37-44. I must have misunderstood.
Cheers.

Max list size (excluding Rookie B) used to be 44. It was reduced to 42 around Covid time

For the first time in ages the list is starting to become well balanced, albeit a couple of obvious gaps to attend to. E.g. speedy small forward.
Whether the list will ever become good enough to contend is, of course, another matter.

Still have the same midfield issues but the rest of the list looks a bit better.

this…

BDB is obviously happy with the midfield personnel or we would have made more moves trade wise IMO

Perhaps wanting to progress with who we have now as is, many of which early stages of career. Plus potentially might see some players change roles, I wouldn’t be surprised if Durham is going into mid rotations

We need Setterfield to stay on the park

  1. Not 44.

precisely why we should have picked up stevens.

I think they’d defer to others before Stevens would have got the gig even if we picked him

He dropped for some reason or another, be it past ACL or poor combine testing. Man child dominating juniors but perhaps not having the athletic profile to do the same against AFL BBM might have seen him slide

Do wonder also if we have those inside mids in our VFL team thinking IF required and if performing then at mid season one might be an mSD rookie list chance
