Maybe itâs players who played at least one game in 2021.
Are there many players who are perceived as good enough to be drafted (in the ND no less) but then end up genuinely not good enough for a VFL list?

I can only think of onr in recent ish years: Lucas Cook (early pick too, 10 or 15). Arguably Yestin Eades too (but he was pick 60 or 70, and didnât do himself any favours).
But I really couldnât tell you the first thing about how a plethora of late picks from WA/SA/QLD clubs have gone in state league - thereâs probably a handful more.
Thereâs a few who werenât really up to it early days, got cut, but ended up very good state league players: think Michael Still, Ben Jolley, Sean Gregory.
And plenty more who get absolutely rekd by injury, or off field stuff.
All of which tells you how rare it is that recruiters completely whiff on talent alone.

Did Eades ever prove himself not good enough for State League? I thought he got into his legal trouble with us and immediately went off the rails.

Elite players: Three â Nick Hind (general defender), Darcy Parish (midfielder), Jake Stringer (mid-forward).
The Bombersâ three elite-rated players is up from one in season 2020.
Defender Jordan Ridley was the Bombersâ only elite-rated player entering season 2021 but his rating slipped to above average.
Recruit Nick Hind earned an elite rating in his first season at the Bombers after comfortably filling the void at half-back left by the departure of Adam Saad.
Young gun Darcy Parish, who averaged 30.5 disposals a game, and midfielder-forward Jake Stringer â coming off a 45-goal season â were also elevated to an elite ranking.
The Bombers had seven players rated above average â captain Dyson Heppell (general defender), Mason Redman (general defender), Ridley (general defender), Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (general forward), Will Snelling (general forward), Zach Merrett (midfielder) and Kyle Langford (wing).
Darcy Parish has been elevated into the elite according to Champion Data.

I donât understand these articles at all. Champion datas own rankings, the AFL player ratings, dont even agree with them. Merrett ranks much higher then Hind on the AFL player ratings. Its just click bait at this point.
I donât know what or where the actual ratings are coming from but the Merrett vs Hind thing is because theyâre not being ranked in the same group. Merrett is rated above average in the midfield group, Hind is rated elite in the general defender group. Their rating points relative to each other are irrelevant.

Champion data just use some algorithm, with weights assigned to each metric relative to player position, and the top X in each position are named elite.
Max Gawn was not named as an elite ruck (Nic Nat, Hickey and Grundy were); but I reckon most people would rank Gawn ahead of all three (and by some distance) as a ruck.

Can make a strong case for all 3 of those players being elite, and doing things that others in the team did not, particular in terms of impact. So yeah the algorithm looks pretty accurate.
I expect Ben Hobbs to slot into that elite group for 2022

Merrett isnât compared with Hind though, heâs compared with other midfielders.
Youâd be crazy not to suggest Merrett wasnât an elite footballer, but itâs difficult to say heâs an elite midfielder, cos there are so many bloody good midfielders in the comp.
Hind is rated elite for a general defender, which seems fair to me.
Ridley is the one thatâs off. Regardless of their rankings, he is an elite defender.

Champion Data doesnât rate pure talent.
The main knock on Ridley is that he doesnât take enough risks with his disposal, and perhaps doesnât get enough touches.
But we all know Ridley is a serious talent who only needs to tweak his game a touch, and heâll be a gun (statistically speaking).
More appropriate location.
Listing those who would be at risk:
- Hurley.
- Who are on the senior list and uncontracted, it would probably be Ham, Guelfi, Brand, Eyre, Stewart, and Phillips. McDonagh if he was on a 1 year contract.
- Who are on the rookie list (since I believe we could cut two rookies and use their spots for the ND as we have 6 rookies), well probably all of them are a little at risk unless they show enough in 2022.
Everyone else who is out of contract is probably very safe. Obviously a number of the above are expected to be pretty safe if they develop as expected as well. We donât really have many (any?) obvious delisting/retiring candidates except Hurley.
Hird and McBride are Cat Bâs so theyâre not really relevant.

I agree itâs not an obvious list of players, but there are a lot of guys who could easily end up on the chopping block. Really, anyone in the 23-28 sort of bracket who got a one year contract extension last year is to some degree on a âletâs see how you go next yearâ contract. If we have a really good year, the prospects of those kind of guys being kept on longer as depth or role players is substantially improved, even if they donât improve as players. If we follow our traditional pattern after losing an elimination final, there are plenty who could be casualties.
