I think our non-midfield lines are still looking allright in regard to the rebuild.
Backs - reid, Roberts, hayes, clarke, johnson and potentially nguyen have all showed something in the afl/vfl and all under 20 games.
Forward - Kako, Caddy, ADW, Gerreyn. two potential small forwards this year via NGA.
Thats a fair bit of youth thats played less than 20 games that all could develop to good players with experience. Add to that list Vigo, SEH, Edwards and Tsatas and thats 14 players under 20 games we have to work with. (16 if you count the two NGAs, which i wonât. ) Bryan still only on 20 odd games too.
Now lies the problem. Wheres the improvement gunna come from with our 50+ game players?
Our midfield has decent depth but apart from Merrett, there are no A graders and its a real problem. Duz could get there and while parish was A grade 4 years ago, he looks cooked now. Hobbs and Setters are bog average, Sheil will retire soon, and Caldwells ceiling looks like a decent defensive midfielder.
Imo we must be targeting a star midfielder via trade or drafting one if we think they could be a star.
We must be moving past prior, hobbs, setters, jones, gresham shiel, Laverde, ADJ, menzie, cox and guelfi as all have proven to be just average players. You could add Langford and Redman to that list if they donât turn things around fast.
So this year i would cut as much as i could from that last list, pick up the two NGA boys and use our first 2 picks on targeting a star midfielder via trade or draft.

You are kidding yourself if you think a âstarâ midfielder will choose us over other clubs.
This is the argument that falls flat, for those people who think we shouldnât be focussing on the draft.

Not Essendon fault the teams below us are too crap to beat us.
The most embarrassing part is when they got the ball, our players approached them front on, they had no hesitation to walk through the tackle. It is like they didnât respect our players at all.
Our players shat their pants when the opposition came at them front on, when we had the ball.
The Westâs donât argue on Roberts and then telling him he is a small kid, was so insulting to watch.
Maybe we need to draft Dyson Sharp, even though we have too many mids.
Thatâs what Iâm saying. Winning these games is to our detriment
But we actually really need to be bottoming out in order to secure elite talent and losing those games

Only way to do that is to tank and thats not going to.happen
That might change this week.
Our confidence has taken a battering, even the good players.
We could easily lose Dreamtime.
I think it might be good if we do go down.

The reaction to the loss last night was at an all time high it will be even worse next week if they lose.
Maybe for some it will be good but majority of the fan base wonât be good with it.

Caddy - moved from being 100% potential to showing he can play. Does a game where he got zero delivery mean heâs now crap?

Draper / Bryant - showed clear development until they copped injuries. Are you saying these guys werenât an improvement?
Some positive (but early) 2025 NGA signs.
Plus a MFC first - even at pick 6 or 7 itâs nice to have.
Thatâs why us clappers see list improvement.
