List build - where are we going in the next 70,000 posts? (Part 3)

I look at the absolute absurd contract decisions with our mid 20s list cloggers and just don’t understand it:

Why sign Jones and Guelfi for 2 extra years when single year extensions where MORE than enough. Who signed Gresham for 3yrs ffs.
Why did we re-sign so many medium/tall average forwards in Edwards, McMahon and May.
Why re-sign Setters as opposed to taking a look at some sign on players?
Why did we sign SEH so early in the year last year,
Why did we even get Prior

Seems like if you can navigate your way through to your early 20s, you get a free pass all the way up to retirement.

Don’t get me wrong, im quite bullish with our list and think we have the collective group youngsters in the league. Just baffled at these 9 or 10 spuds who appear to be getting a free pass

I agree with the delists I think the only tweaks that would happen would be May 2 years Perkins 2 years or trade, these aren’t what I would do but I think the club would do.

Good list

Id say delist Setterfield, Unwin, Cox, Guelfi, Gresham

meh they most likely won’t get another contract

Yeah from memory Gresham hit a trigger in his contract for an extension last year. Plays x amount of games, means he keeps going, and from what it sounds it is the same this year. I would be interested to see if Guelfi and Setterfield have the same clause this year. Considering Gresh was told end of last year to have a look at other offers, I would expect Essendon will play him just under the game clause to avoid a trigger - provided injury/form.

I’m also of the opinion that Essendon need to review their tall stocks a little in defence, ruck and forward departments. Do we honestly see Gerreyn, Jones, Cox, Edwards, Mcmahon, or May replacing Langford, Wright and Caddy anytime soon unless due to injury? Robey is taller than Caddy, and is expected to play forward, then we also have Nic Martin or potentially even Blake Justice who are both 192cm odd and also play forward at times. In words to the effect of Brad, ā€˜Im not worried about having too tall a forward line, more a immobile one.’ I understand reasons for keeping them on for depth, but I would be expecting some of that group being delisted end of the season. Ones that have that versatility in either pinch-hit ruck and even defensive swing will probably be more likely to stay on.

2027 top 10 will be weak with Tassie allowed to sign up to six players this year. The team who gets the wooden spoon in 2027 could miss out on a Harley Reid type at pick 1 because Tassie have dibbs what a farking joke

I think the club wont invest in the 2027 draft we hit FA and trades hard then draft Bewick. Hope Bewick says ā€œno thanksā€ to Tasmaina

I hoping its just a case that you just can’t get rid of them all in one season, so we should expect another clear out at the end of the year.

For our youngsters. I think we stack up pretty darn nicely against the tigers, many of whom believe have hit the draft the hardest lately.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, assistance package. Just to point out one from 2019:

But more specifically, one concession being - Ability to pre-sign Gold Coast SUNS academy players (including those from Darwin) without bidding.

This package helped secure the likes of Rowell and Anderson with priority picks, as well as selection for Davies, Budarick and Jeffries pre-draft. Priority picks aside, the academy access alone would potentially secure the likes of Justice, Bewick, Rodan (should he want to nominate the planes), and Darwish.

I am not sure why Guelfi is on everyones delist list? Whilst not overly impressive, Guelfi does contribute in most games. I am not sure what injurues he keeps getting as it seems he doesn’t last a full season. Does anyone know what the problem is? He only came back late in the season last year IIR, so 2025 is not a true reflection of his talents. IMO, lets see how he goes when he is fully fit with a full preseason. Hopefully, he may surprise a few people.

From ChatGPT:

  • 2025 Season: Guelfi averaged 0.75 goals per game (9 goals in 12 games).
  • 2024 Season: He averaged 1.15 goals per game (15 goals in 13 games).
  • 2023 Season: He averaged 1.08 goals per game (14 goals in 13 games)

I can’t believe Sharp is just 18 yo.

I think you answered your own question there only getting 12-13 games a year out of him and half of those are nothing games and then you might get one or two good games a season.

yes, but most coaches say that anyone contributing 1 goal per game is absolutely worth keeping on the list, so why are Blitzers so keen on delisting Guelfi?

Because he is deadset average. Very definition of a list clogger. We really need to move players like him on if we want to improve

…if a Guelfi replacement player doesn’t contribute a least 1 goal per game, we are worse off.

Scott keeps dropping Guelfi so I really don’t think he has had enough game time to become consistent. He can kick multiple goals when he is up and running; he kicked 4 goals in 2022, 3 goals in 2023 plus combined this tally with some great defensive pressure.

He averages just over 0.5 of a goal per game for his career and in 120 odd games he has kicked 3 or more goals just 4 times.

Very definition of average.

If we can’t find someone at all on our list that can go better it really does show how poor our list is

I met him in a bar officer I swear it!

probably because he doesn’t actually average a goal a game and he is injured more than he plays

Is there some other Guelfi, because I can’t imagine that we are suggesting that the 120 game 28 year old we have on our list hasn’t had enough game time to become consistent.

There’s some genuinely weird takes on players getting around.

No more so that the very odd takes from the flight plan podcast on Twitter.

Who were complaining that people have been too hard on Gresham, and that he’s been a good recruit for the club.

Very odd stuff from them on Twitter.
