List build - where are we going in the next 70,000 posts? (Part 3)

I can see maybe St Kilda (who had offered him 1mil at the end of 2024) or even GWS probably have a look at Merrett, over the likes of Hawks who are going to be more likely trying to pry Butters or Humphry this season

Everything I’ve heard over the last month is still that Merrett won’t leave Victoria and also only wants to play at Hawthorn.

We have to try and convince him to go elsewhere otherwise take what we can from the Hawks IMO

How was Hawthorn’s offer not worth it, if one year on, you think a single first rounder is a fair deal for him?

It was unders!

Yeah, it was. But not waaaaay unders. It was enough.

The minor sting from accepting unders for a guy who will be gone in 6 months is far more preferable than what we have/don’t have right now.

Lol. Classic.

I am in the minority here, but I honestly cannot see how anyone can argue that deal was ā€œundersā€

There’s plenty on here, me included, that want to see the biggest swinging of the axe in the club’s list management history. If I’m sworn in as autocratic dictator of Essendon today, Parish, Langford, Perkins, Prior, McKay and Merrett (among others) are all gone later in the year.

Obviously that leaves a big experience gap. How would y’all go about about managing this? Would be great to get 5 Luke Parkers at the club but it’s easier said than done.

Identify players who are only being offered a single year deal by their current club and offer them something longer.

That’s basically how you do it. Whether they accept, or whether they are going to be any good, dunno.

Also just more on the points/bidding, if we are going off the current ladder as it stands, bids on the likes of Walker/Cochrane would cause a fair bit of movement in eating up two picks for PORT/CARLTON. It will look more something like:

  1. PORT – Cochrane

  2. CARLTON – Walker

  3. RICHMOND

  4. ESSENDON

  5. GWS

  6. STK

  7. ADEL

  8. WCE

  9. GEEL

  10. COLL

  11. BL

  12. MELB

  13. HAWK

  14. NMFC

  15. FRE

  16. MELB

  17. WB

  18. RICH (COMPO)

  19. ESS (COMPO)

  20. GWS (COMPO)

  21. STK (COMPO)

  22. RICH

  23. ESS

  24. HAWKS

  25. HAWKS

Although, I’d have an eye on other club-tied prospects such as Lucas Robinson (FREO), Ethan Matthews (GWS), Aiden McCartney (SYD/NMFC), Tanner Armstrong (RICH), Cooper Hodge (BRIS/HAWKS), Caylen Murray (BRIS), Archie Hill (GCS), Matthew Owen (BRIS), and Garrison Kenh (WC) who would potentially push into that teens or twenties picks, and would move around the order some more.

I thought it was fair enough too until I saw what GC gave up for Tracc. Market factors swayed me a little. Yes, Tracc is better but Zach is less injury prone. Balances out. Even if accounting for this, Tracc is still worth more in trade, the gap was still a touch big for me.

That’s where I am also different to most. I don’t think there was much of a difference between the Trac and Merrett trades.

Dees had to include 3 second round picks. We didn’t have to include anything.

Petracca was also contracted until the end of 2029. As a rule the price drops each year closer you are to FA.

Fair point. Maybe the deal offered by Hawthorn is closer to fair than I’d first thought.

True, but there was stuff coming back from GC, including their first rounder this year. It kinda all balanced out.

It pretty much came down to 7 and 8 for Trac

Gettable has us interested in Jed Walter and Joel Amartey as key position prospects. I’m assuming that Rosa et al. have or are putting a line through McMahon and possibly May?

Certainly McMahon. No way they’ve given up on May.

Suspect it is more of a case of planning for a life beyond 2MP.

So where are these first rounders coming from or have we given up on our academy kids?

I’d happily give up on our NGA’s and f&s for Jed Walter. We need a Jed Walter type player more than we need any other player. A big aggressive forward is worth their weight in gold.

I think that’s more a free agent puzzle piece when you’re a step away from success.
