List build - where are we? Where are we going next (Part 1)

And the hurdles GWS had to meet to get someone onto their academy was pretty easy. Many of their academy players had little to do with the club and would have gone down the afl path either way.

Interesting article, not sure what it says about the EFC list build… main take away seems to be that you need a few years in a row of good drafting plus getting lucky on some cheap pick ups. Kind of obvious but good to see two practical examples.

They did not want him did they? Passed in him on mid season draft

The non-NSW/QLD academies were a knee-jerk reaction by the AFL to get Eddie McGuire to shut up. They were not an attempt to introduce fairness to the league.

They succeeded in meeting both of those goals.

Some of the real standouts from the Richmond domination yesterday for me are:

  1. Hitting targets is extremely important. We need to fix our ball movement to avoids the diabolical turnovers we have. A big part of this is to focus more on better skilled players with better decision making.

  2. Clean hands and pace give you a competitive advantage. We should again prioritise this in our draft.

  3. Ruckman matter, and a poor ruck division made up of a Broken down average player, a never was, a talented unknown coming off a major injury and couple of part timers it getting to diabolical stage.

  4. You need some real intensity/aggression around the footy. Preferably with some serious size.

This is how I think we should guide our delistings, trading and drafting.

WE have known this since 2014

They tried to get him for free via Cat B list, AFL said no.

In the end they chose to keep McNeice’s AFL availability over giving Adam Tipungwuti a chance in the MSD

I think there’s a massive decision to be made right now on the shape of the list. And it has to be made by Rutten. What does he want at his disposal going forward? What’s his gameplan, and what components are we missing. What type of talls does he need? Does he rate ruckmen?

yep - that was impressive.

that is a massive key to winning a flag, or at least getting really close to one. In the 2nd half of 2018 we had that aggression for the first time since early 2000’s. Then it just disappeared this year. Was a major factor in our poor season imo

Bringing aggression and pressure every week, will keep you ultra competitive. Then you use your speed, skills, game plan to win the games

Physicality aside (and yes it’s a key) there’s also “working really hard to restrict the opposition’s options”. Too often our opponents were able to move the ball out with ease and our players were well away from the contest. Running hard and smart to set up and restrict what they can do makes a big difference. It means they have to hold on to the ball longer and that gives us a better chance to tackle them. Or it will make them rush their disposal and thus force a turnover.

Cat B / Father sons.

yeh as mentioned above only ones missed - possibly Hanna, think Adam Tippa was too old when it was first announced.

Will be rewards to come in the future though. Best players so far recently recruited have been father sons i guess - Joe Daniher, Darcy Daniher and Jake Long

Hanna - was a key defender and we are pretty strong there.

Chris Johnsons kid is NGA and Cat B eligible he did his knee so could be added to the cat B list as a freebie and should go undrafted as he will be 12 months out of footy, might work well for us though.

Fletcher eligible this year, but still may not be ready for AFL after playing under 18’s as a overage player.

next year we have the kid mentioned above…Brand - he could be good - but think similar to zerk thatcher - probably a second/third round pick type depending on the draft, hardly top 10 talent.

But in the future have the Davey twins who are tracking nicely.
Tex Wanganeen if Port fold between now and when he is draft eligible.

As for tiwi guys
Stanley Tipiloura , Tyson Tipuamantamerri and Brayden Rioli – the younger brother of Richmond premiership player, Daniel – are expected to start boarding next year at St Patrick’s College in Ballarat as they continue to pursue their dream of playing in the AFL…these guys will probably play TAC cup next year so will be interesting to see how they progress.

Is he available to any club or do we have first dibs somehow?

Might get an earlier glimpse of these kids in the NTFL for the Bombers/StMary’s this summer.

He wasn’t for the Mid-Season Draft, the was talk that he might become eligible later in the year.

What’s the go with Brayden Rioli? We the only ones with access to him outside normal draft? And how good is he?

No idea if he’s any good, but he is signed to our academy. He plays for St Mary’s, which I believe is Darwin based. Given that as of today the suns have academy access to Darwin, if he’s really good I’d imagine they’ll try some ■■■■ with the AFL.
