List build - where are we? Where are we going next (Part 1)

200 games - 1
150-200 games - 4
100-150 games 5 (including joe) (not including Zac Clarke)
50 - 100 games 11 (includes mature agers - Ambrose, Saad, Tippa, McKernan, Brown)

so potentially 20/22 could play 50+games

less than 50 in that could play some games

  • Redman, laverde, Snelling, Hartley, Guelfi, Stewart,

the rest are basically rookies

Next years milestones
200 - Hooker, maybe Hurley if injury free, or we play a few finals
150 - Devon Smith,
Stringer and Bellchambers are a chance if they are both Durableā€¦
100 - Saad, Tippa, Ambrose should get there
Gleeson, McKernan would need to play every game
and parish & Fantasia finals too

50 - Stewart, Hartley Laverde all closeā€¦all not guaranteed a full season. Guelfi would need to play most of the season.

No, but normally thereā€™s 2-3 old clubs, 2-3 young ones, and the rest are all basically the same.

BEST 22

B: Saad - Ambrose - Francis

HB: Heppell - Bear - Gleeks

C: Redman - Parish - Irish

HF: Raz - Daniher - Smith

F: Stringer - Smack - Walla

R: * Belly, - Shiel - Zerrett

INT: Pidge, Zaka, Langers, Hooker

E: Guelfi, Lav, Clarke

  • Until Draper is fit and can be transitioned into the seniors. Currently listed as a rookie.

KPB:

Hartley, Zerk

Small/medium defenders:

Ridley, Jok (utility)

Mids:

Clarke, Mutch, Mynott (also forward), Long

KPF:

Gown, * Brown (more HFF), Stewart

Small/medium forwards:

Lav, Snelling, Ham, Mozzie, Begley,

Ruck:

Draper, Zlarke

Delisted:

McNiece (rookie)
Houlahan (senior)

Retired:

Myers (senior)
Dea (rookie)
Baguley (senior)

Uncontracted (beyond 2019):

Long (senior)
Hartley (senior)
Brown (senior)
Jok (rookie)
Mynott (rookie)
Snelling (senior)
Clarke (rookie)

Signed:

Ross McQuillan (Int Rookie).

Started 2019 with 46 listed players (40 senior listed, 6 rookies).
Currently have 42 listed players (37 senior listed, 4 rookies, 1 int rookie - this is including 7 uncontracted players).

Contract decisions need to be made on 7 players.

Iā€™d retain Hearts & Brown for KPB & KPF depth.
Iā€™d retain Snelling for Raz backup and until Mozzie is ready.
Iā€™d rookie Jok & Mynott (not sure on Mynott, TBH?)
Iā€™d delist Long & Zlarke.

Draper will no doubt be upgraded to the senior list, so that would leave us with 37 senior listed players (ability to recruit and senior list 3 players) and 2 rookie listed players (Jok, Mynott) and 1 int rookie (McQuillan).

Draft/Trade/List Build:

Cody Brand (potential Next Gen Academy player). 195cm defender. (NB: available in 12 months - 2020 draft).

Must address ruck stock issues as a matter of urgency. Almost tempted to leave Zlarke on the rookie list, but, yeah, nah. Draft an effective ruckman.

Need to also consider our KP stocks, with a virtually cooked Hooker (one effective year left - if that) and Hurley with 2 years left. At present, we have backup with Hearts and Zerk, but nothing after that. Same goes for our forwards. Smack & Brown are getting on in age and arenā€™t gunna improve from here.

And we need higher quality mids as well. List spots could open up if we can manage to trade any currently contracted players - otherwise - we go to the draft with only 3 positions on our senior list available and rookie spots.

Is Brand this yearā€™s draft or next?

I wanted to know how many Draft Points each AFL team notionally has on its playing listā€¦couldnā€™t find it onlineā€¦tried to do it myselfā€¦quickly tired of itā€¦just put in fudge factors for strange things like GWS/GC introduction prelist drafts (I canā€™t be bothered reading up and understanding these drafts), all rookies at zero etcā€¦admittedly a lazy and questionable processā€¦anyway, here are the results on a ā€˜vibeā€™ level:

GWS = 44.9k
Carlton = 44.1k
GC = 36.6k
Collingwood = 34.0k
NM = 32.7k
WC = 31.1k
Port = 30.4k
Fremantle = 29.6k
Brisbane = 29.3k
Essendon = 28.8k
St Kilda = 28.7k
Richmond = 27.6k
Hawthorn = 27. 2k
Melbourne = 25.4k
WB = 24.4k
Adelaide = 23.8k
Sydney = 21.9k
Geelong = 19.2k

Some conclusions:

  • Donā€™t be drawn into commentary this weekend that a GWS premiership is a triumph against the odds.
  • Carlton should be ashamed and didnā€™t deserve priority picks.
  • GC still have plenty of young talent and donā€™t deserve more priority picks.
  • Geelong/Sydney have done an incredible job with late/rookie picks.

ā€œAll players named in the 2019 NAB AFL All Stars Futures match will be eligible for the 2020 NAB AFL Draftā€.

This is really interestingā€¦ doing Godā€™s work there CG

Serious question. Do we have a next generation academy recruiting area thing?

If so, where is it?

If so, how come there isnā€™t every any talent coming from it? It seems like lots of others clubs are linked with NGA talent come draft time.

I think we have a region within Vic that we engage with but it doesnā€™t provide draft concessions like the non football states?

So 2020 NAB AFL draft is next year right?

Depends on the composition of senior/rookie list right?

Great summary. Backline was our absolute strength and Hurls, Francis and Ambrose looks light on. Obviously everything depends on JD and Fanta staying and who we may be able to bring in.

I still think Chook has a strong year left but a 200cm back such as Howard would be great.

Iā€™d certainly keep Brown as depth but move Harts on.

Ruckman is vital. A kid off an ACL with no games, Bellcho and ZClarke will not cut it just as it didnā€™t this year. I think TBell will drop off cliff quickly.

I really like Zerk and Ridley. Both need size and strength. Iā€™ve no doubt about Zerk - 195cm, reads it well and fearless, just needs the body.

Yes, thatā€™s right. Have edited my post to reflect it better.

Yes. This is how our ā€˜currentā€™ list looks in terms of senior/rookie listed players. That will no doubt change next year. I have promoted Draper to the senior list.

We have two, the first is the North-West corridor of Melbourne which extends out to the Macedon area. This is basically the recruiting zone for the Calder Cannons and we only have bidding rights on kids from this area who have at least one parent born in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands or any kid who has indigenous heritage.

Calder has gone from being one of the best TAC clubs to becoming a poorer one in recent times. The only name that I know of who was linked to our academy is Ben Ronke. Fwiw Adam Saad may have been eligible if the program had been in place during his junior years. There was also a pretty handy Nigerian KP prospect, Ovie Magbegor, who went to play college basketball in the states.

More certainly needs to be done in the area to engage with the multicultural kids and get them playing and developing their footy. Adam Saad is running a program for Muslim kids which should help to engage and develop them. Obviously, given the restrictions on which kids qualify and the certain demographics of the zone make it game of luck.

The second zone is in the NT and includes the Tiwi Islands and West Arnhem Land.

The Hanna who plays VFL, plus Chris Johnsonā€™s kid qualify.
just havenā€™t had anyone really great yet.
Thereā€™s a fair element of luck here.

Also: thereā€™s a whole dedicated thread for NGAs. Cody Brand looking draftable, 2020 draft though.

Dogs have done well in NGA with a likely top three pick. Cal also talked up Brand in hi AFL article.

@HirdMentality answered this well, but I just wanted to add. The four northern clubs had academies before the other clubs and they are more extensive. So when you hear of guys like Heeney, Blakey, Hopper, Hipwood be drafted this way, EFC and most other clubs werenā€™t allowed academies then, and what weā€™re allowed now is arguably less than those clubs had/have.
