List build - where are we? Where are we going next (Part 1)

WTF?

Won’t get Stringer

Hasn’t even nominated us yet

We do need one more YOUNG ruck on the list, and this emptying of the rookie list creates the space for that…

I also am open to recycling a decent delistee from another club (eg. Menadue?)…I mean, Snelling is a retread, so they’re not all bad…

I also like having an empty space for the mid season draft…its not like you cop that many injuries in the first half of the season that you run out of players!..and having that spot open for a Riccardi-type is worthwhile IMO as we approach a heavily-compromised draft at the end of next year.

I thought this was a list management discussion, how silly of me.

It is a list management discussion. I was discussing list management. Contracts are part of list management. And if a list manager thought it was a good idea to sign a player to a two year contract then delist him four months later without some extraordinarily bad act by the player, I’d sack the list manager.

Yeah, not sure we are on the same page with this little exchange. Simply expressing a view on players I would not have on the list (note I am not the EFC list manager)

Interesting to do a best 22 from 2024 so any play who is currently 29 or over won’t be there.

F Tippa Stewart Fantasia (?traded)
HF Langford Daniher (?traded) Stringer
C Gleeson McKenna Cutler
HB Saad Francis Ridley
B Ambrose BZT Redman

Ruck Draper Shiel McGrath

Inter Parish Hepp Guelfi Smith

Other: Ham, Mosquito, Snelling, Mutch, Begley, Clarke, Hartley, Gown, Laverde, 2 Irish, Plus new draftees.

We are actually ok age wise, with lots of potential for new draftees

Maybe it’s just me, but even factoring in improvement that ^ is as depressing as hell.

Yeah there is a real lack of superstars!

That’s not a bad list.
With a couple of expected additions to strengthen it you get a forward line of
Walla Daniher Fantasia
Davey 1 Davey 2 Stringer

That should be exciting those who want more X factor, and appeal to traditionalists

between now and 2024 there has to be a big turnover - no way we’d have only current players as the best 22. At least a third should be gone.

Probably correct, but a fair amount of the position you could say have locked players like stringer, Shiel etc. kinda shows areas we need quality in.

True. In one way you look at the names and think yeah they are good and could stay, But they can’t all be that good and still be keeping their spot.

What has been the turnover for a good side over 5 years?

Hopefully these list changes mean we are lifting the bar for what we expect of a listed player. Sure, you keep a few in for potential or growth or development, but there has to be clear criteria that says stay or go.

Could still be placed on the rookie list

You’ve left out Captain Merrett, in his Brownlow year, of all years!

Cutting Clarke and Long doesn’t require any justification at all but the other two can be considered a little stiff.

I hope this is a clear indication that Rutten and Caracella have a particular player profile in mind and there is no sense developing players that don’t fit that.

Woosha no doubt would have kept them for another five years without playing them.

Hmm, that’s not that great, although it isn’t terrible either. Given it wouldn’t exactly be a surprise if all of Stewart, Fantasia, Daniher and Langford were gone by the end of next year, that kind of shafts your forward line.

Your midfield is missing Merrett and you’ve got Parish and Smith on the bench, which is a good thing because personally I think anyone putting Gleeson and McKenna in the centre is asking a lot, and adding Cutler is then a laugh. I mean, really? You think McKenna, Gleeson and Cutler will be our best centreline available in four years? Because if so, lets just give up now.

The back line is the area of strength, especially when Gleeson and McKenna get moved back. Thin for depth on talls, which is why I’d hope Hartley is kept. Obviously some of that depth would presumably come from new recruits.

So a revised position with the most at risk guys gone.

FF: Tippa . ??? . Stringer
HF: Langford . ??? . Smith
C: McGrath . Heppell . Merrett
R: Draper . Shiel . Parish
HB: Saad . Ambrose . McKenna
FB: Francis . Zerk . Redman

Inter: Gleeson, Snelling,

If JD does leave, we desperately need two more tall forwards or Gown & Stewart to make it, and more midfielders. I think a few look promising, but hell, I said the same on Mynott.

I don’t think so

One way or another we’d have wanted/needed at least two live ND picks and 2 rookies

Retirements aside they’ve cut anyone uncontracted who was not likely to contribute to helping the senior team win games of footy in the now or near future.

In saying that Rutten would have a clear view on what type of player he wants also.

How many picks we taking to the draft? Seems a lot with not the strongest of hands
