Match review thread vs SHITNEY Round 2 2024

Wont be surprised if we jag a win or 2

Could not agree more. The club would know that we aren’t competing for anything this year, so if the collateral damage of establishing a harder edge and cutthroat environment is a few suspensions, so be it.

Before anyone sooks it up, I’m not advocating to go punch blokes in the head, I’m advocating playing closer to the edge that establishes an uncompromising culture.

Hasn’t that trophy already been created for the worst on ground in a grand final?

Hard to be too unhappy with that performance. Effort was there even though we had more than a few passengers in Heppell, Menzie, Hind and Laverde etc

Merrett and Gresham were huge, however one of the issues is that Sydney have about half a dozen players with Merrett’s kicking skills or better. We just can’t use the ball well enough.

They also have better runners and a better defensive setup. We did well to stay in the game.

One thing that was a novelty this morning was the result didn’t seem to bother me.

Like non plussed care factor.

Whether that coincides with an increase in passion for Liverpool I don’t know. And I can’t put a claw on it but it almost feels like I’m freeing up emotional hard drive space for something down the track, not sure.

Maybe it’s better the Devil I know.

But saga aside they’ve had long enough. My young bloke can have interstate boundary line membership but unless there’s a clean break with dodoro it’s Gough time to give what was once a club worth caring about the ar$e.

They’ve done a fair bit to re right a few wrongs, but need to to put a big full stop on a big statement, otherwise that factor that was once such a big part of me is seemingly leaving.

Papley would never be close enough to an actual contest for that to happen. He’s a loudmouth showboat chipscab.

Personally I prefer they go over ā€œthe Edgeā€ a couple of times and learn when to pull back rather than being a nice friendly bunch of guys as they have been the last few years.

I really learned in the last couple of rounds last year how much I appreciate it when my team shows maximum effort. I thought they did that last night but yeah still a way to go.

Having had time to digest the game & the thing that frustrates me the most is that Essendon still lacks team defence. 20 years and we are still the easiest team to score against, only North has had more points scored against them per game.

Every coach has spoken about a focus on defence, yet the players NEVER deliver. Clearly either the forwards or the midfield are very lazy in transition or lack the intelligence to apply the strategies suggested by the coaches.

It only takes one player to not chase for the opposition to find an easy way through as the whole structure brakes down. We have a relatively slow midfield & forward group and we keep getting found out. How many times were the Essendon players all running back down the middle of the ground while the Swans kept their width and had so many clear targets.

The positives:

  • our forwards can score & kick straight
  • Merritt sets the example
  • Gresham, McKay, Goldy & Duursma are all improving us

The negatives:

  • injury management (soft tissue)
  • fast players are not fast when chasing
  • overall we lack speed
