Match review vs racists, junkies, match fixers and maggots - 2020 round 5

Was that the day we lost by nearly 25 goals?

I remember telling people that Barry Davis’s absence cost us 12 goals and the umpires another 12. In reality then, the game was close.

I remember McKenna slotting them from the boundary.

Sandy Talbot was also Leigh Matthews’ opponents when he kicked 11 at Waverley. All 1970-71 IIRC.

No I didn’t play that day lol.

I just looked it up. We lost by 147pts and McKenna kicked 12.
Funny thing is, no Sandy Talbot on the teamsheet. I must have been mixing it up. My memory Is not all that flash. Things I think I remember turn out to be wrong. I can’t see a likely full back in the team list. I think Peter Daniel was playing forward by then. Possibly Stuart Barclay? Some obscure names in the team eg Brian Pirouet, Ian Anderson, Ray Smith, Ken Hogan, Wayne Headlam. And who on earth was Trevor Heath?

Trevor Heath wore #58. Good 2nds HFF.

Ian Anderson was a useful 2nd ruckman/forward who went to Vietnam and delivers Gallipoli addresses in Port Fairy.

Brian Pirouet Back pocket ruck, CHB from the Wimmera. Played at Prahran after Essendon.

Wayne Headlam was another from the 1966 3rds flag. Second ruckman. Wore #40 then #14. Saw him on one of those specialist quiz shows a few years back. He was a teacher in the suburbs.

Ken Hogan was a second rover…#29. Died of cancer in the eighties I think.

Ray Smith was a Queenslander…useful HBF. In the Tuddy days, he was players’ rep. The story went that the committee asked what the players thought of Tuddy. Smith told them…and was cleared to Melbourne that night.

I don’t recall Daniel playing forward.

Good point about past history of clearances vs Pies:
2020 Round 5: Ess 10. 3.63 def. Pies 7.6.48, Pies lose clearances 28-38 and win free kicks 21-12.
2019 Round 23: Pies 10.16.76 def. Ess 10.5.65. Pies win clearances 38-33 and win free kicks 16-12.
2019 Round 6: Pies 10.13.73 def. Ess 10.9.69. Pies lose clearances 40-29 and win free kicks 17-14.
2018 Round 16: Pies 12. 6.78 def. Ess 9.8.62. Pies win clearances 42-35 and win free kicks 27-17.
2018 Round 5: Pies 14.17.101 def Ess 7.10.52. Pies lose clearances 25-34 and win free kicks 20-13.
2017 Round 16: Ess 18. 9.117 def Pies 12.8.80. Pies lose clearances 29-37 and win free kicks 22-16.
2017 Round 5: Ess 15.10.100 def Pies 11.16.82. Pies lose clearances 42-37 and = free kicks 9-9.

So:

  1. Pies have lost clearances to us 5 times since the start of the 2017 season resulting in 2 wins, 3 losses.
  2. Pies have won clearances over us 2 times in the same period for 2 wins, 0 losses.
  3. Over this time frame, Pies have never lost the free kick count against us with the best we could do being a free kick draw 9-9 (very low) back on Anzac Day, 2017. Since that game, the Pies have consistently won the free kick count, often by a considerable number.

What do I draw from this analysis?
a) There is a reasonably strong correlation between winning the clearance count and winning the game. The team that has won the clearance count has won 5 out of 7 games.
b) There is strong evidence of statistical bias in the umpiring favouring Collingwood. Leaving aside the initial draw tally, Collingwood has won the free kick tally, often by considerable amounts, the last 6 consecutive games. Statistically, there is only a 1 in 64 chance of that happening. If you flip a coin 6 consecutive occasions (please, try it) it would be freakish to get 6 consecutive heads or tails. It hasn’t always helped them win though, as last night showed. What it has done is allowed them to lose by less than they should.

Totally agree.
Phillips was massive.

ANZAC day last year. 40-29.

You have that the wrong way around.
40-29 our way.

How much did we score from stoppage that day? God I hope we see daniher this year

Dunno, on mobile, difficult to look up.

Be really intrigued to see centre bounce attendances too. To my eye, didn’t notice Pendles at all that many bounces- Treloar, Adams, De Goey in there more than anyone.
But that could well be wrong.

Wayne Richardson brought up the Collingwood 200 with a set shot goal after the final siren.

Good pick up - will go back and fix my original post.

2nd best not so sure but certainly no where near our worst. Langford may yet be the player we thought we were getting
