That’s true…
I think Shiel will struggle for game time next year. He’s best to find a home where he could add something - Saints and Roos makes some sense.
That’s in the range of what we gave for Weideman lmao, imagine trying to suggest that’s what Shiel is actually worth. Taking the ■■■■
Shiel is 31 and has injury issues.
Weidemann was 25 when we drafted him.
Yeah and Sheil is also one of the most professional preparation wise on our list, he has plenty of time left
Whereas Weideman is worse than bog average which is reflected in what it cost us to get him
There’s a whopping 6 years of age difference between them and Shiel has injury issues. As well as that, there was always the chance that a change of scenery could provide new spark for Weid.
The trade value of Weid 2 years ago is much the same as what Shiel’s is now. Odd that you don’t think the trade values we’re comparing aren’t even close.
Sheil would slot in to a least a few teams best 22s
Weid would be lucky to play another game at the level
And you think they are both worth the same?
Right now? No. Right now Shiel has some trade currency. Weid has absolutely none.
But that wasn’t the point.
Your point was you would take pick 50 for Shiel - draft points value for 50 is 273
To trade for Weid we gave pick 37 which is worth 483 points. We got Weid and pick 54 (220 pts) and pick 72 (19 pts). We gave 483 points, got Weid and 239 points back so we paid 244 points which is the equivalent of Pick 51. So what we paid for Weid you suggest we should get for Sheil
Yes. That was my point. Weid was more or less worth in 2023 what Shiel is worth now for the following reasons; Shiel is 31 and injury prone. Weid was 25 and there was the prospect of things turning around for him by being at a new club.
You said this was a pisstake and I found that odd.
Surely if Goldy was going to retire he’d have announced by now. He deserves the montage at the Brownlow and the car at the Grand Final. My assumption is he’s going on next year
He’s so far beyond cooked its not funny. Every second of senior gametime he may get next year would be a travesty against Bryan and even Visentini.
I think it’s more or less cover only and coaching
Don’t disagree. Saying what I think is happening not what should happen
Dunkley was the one
I’m not averse either.
In fact it’s a great idea … the only problem is who or to be precise, who would want to come to us that’s suitable or already being valued by their current club? TBH we’re not these days that destination club we once were.
Some say Parker, but I don’t reckon he’d come to us.
And most Vic clubs on the up or already contending wouldn’t let anyone decent and of leader quality go easily. Very few leave e.g. the cattery, they just retire.
We might be able to get someone who’s interstate yet prefers to be back in Vic due to family etc. But hands up, I don’t know those interstate clubs lists well enough to suggest who.
But rather than a trade to fill a gap, someone who’s solid skills wise (preferably a backman or rotates in the guts) and can enforce a bit and truly knows how to support Zach in raising standards…
I agree. Cut or trade guys we know aren’t going to be there as part of our next premiership (as the saying goes), top up with some experienced 28-30 year old heart and soul players from successful clubs and scour state leagues for the next 21-23 year old Durhams. While keeping our top draft picks to also pick good kids in the draft.
How about we use some sound metrics and process for a change instead of some kind of ‘he’s older and seems like a nice guy’ bull$hit?
I agree, we don’t just want to bring in older players, we need to target genuine leaders and players who can improve the culture. Its very hard externally to know who those players are because we obviously can’t see what they are like internally but we can get a decent idea of how well they lead on the ground. This is why I question marked a player like Mcrae who may actually be introverted for all we know. We’re not going to get a captain with proven leadership so the recruiting process should focus on finding qualities we lack.
Subjectivity is the issue. What kind of mentality makes for a good sportsman? Dodoro valued teacher references… Alternatively, look at some of the peanuts and discards Hawthorn have recruited… finding recruits who have a great character for football sometimes means sifting through and picking up guys that wouldnt pass the pub test in any other profession. We’ve got a lovely bunch of blokes in the dressing room already… the ‘leaders’ we might need might actually be young, arrogant, but skillful and singleminded nobjockeys
