Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness-What Songs Make you Cry

This is a wedding and a funeral song by big IZ. Always brings a tear.

Without trying to make you cry L&P, here is a Moon River version by Morrissey. The 7" version was about 3 minutes long, but this is the 9 minute 12" single which has 3 minute basic song, 3 minute interlude then the song returning as if he is singing from underneath the Moon River, with various effects overlaid. He has tweaked the lyrics too. You might find it all over the top, but give it a go if you have the time spare. Your Dad had great taste.

Personally I have found How to Make Gravy by Paul Kelly very moving, What Child is This (especially the nails spear verse) but the standout is I’ll Stand By You by the Pretenders. I heard this on the radio when driving to see one of our children in hospital, not really knowing how serious it could be. I tried singing along to the chorus but my voice caught in some of the lines and the song would not leave my head.

This one deserves more than one like.
Not a rap for the film clip though.

Like this song but reckon people they ain’t no good is sadder.

Another melancholy one is Van Morrison’s Madame George.

Waits has loads more than Ruby’s Arms and Kentucky Ave that I already noted …San Diego Serenade, Tom Trauberts Blues, Postcard From A Hooker In Minneapolis. Blue Valentine, his version of Somewhere, Burma Shave, Anywhere I Lay My Head. The list goes on…

Thanks for the list, I’ll check them out. Nothing like a great miserable song. LOL

Thank you @up_up. Had a tear in my eye while reminiscing for the whole 9 min. The Morrissey version was lovely - a little different but beautiful nonetheless. Very kind of you to post it.
Your other choices I love also - The Pretenders singing I’ll Stand By You features on my play list also. Rod Stewart does a good version but the Pretenders are fantastic.

On the wrong day, just about any Pink Floyd would fit in this thread.

I remember being home really sick from school one day, and my older brother cut class and came home and put Dark Side of the Moon on from start to finish and smoked a bowl.

When you are light headed, barely coherent and suffering cold sweats, that is NOT a good album to listen to.

Well, unless you purposely chose to feel that way through certain… substances… then you could argue that it’s the only album you should listen to.

That’s really interesting because when I need to lift my mood, I’ll put on ā€˜dark side’ and absolutely belt it out and feel uplifted by the end of the album.

Robert Pollard on the joy and the folly of being a high functioning alcoholic.

ā€œShe’s a tear that hangs inside my soul foreverā€

Every. Damn. Time.

My late aunt had her first son stolen away from her nearly 60 years ago. l still think about him, and wonder where he is.

It’s never over,
My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
…I feel too young to hold on
I’m much too old to break free and run

Nice first album effort from JSB

Another I forgot from waits - Time - great song.

Also I haven’t listened for many years but the whole of Live at the Continental by Chris Wilson is pretty mournful. What ever happened to him?

Edit - he died Jan 2019 of pancreatic cancer. RIP - what a monumental voice he had…

As does this. Not just the song, which is achingly beautiful, but knowing it was his last performance of it.

I think I have something in my eye:

I have this on a 45 with a picture sleeve. Doesn’t always bring a tear to the eye, but never fails to send a shiver down the spine. The picture sleeve was equally as poignant, it was reduced to blue tones, and featured a line up of girls in a beauty pageant, holding up a banner, which read, ā€œDon’t let them kill us.ā€
