I know it’s not a popular view around here but I think Evans gets a massively unfair wrap on Blitz.

I don’t think he did a good job. Very far from it. He made calls I wouldn’t have made (like the self report) and he trusted people he shouldn’t have trusted (like Vlad). And in the end, he made the wrong calls with Hird.

But this idea that he’s some sort of AFL sycophant who deliberately went out and partnered with them to actively screw the Club is just fanciful IMO. It’s conspiracy theory nonsense. For every one objective truth that Bruce Francis and Blitz dug up during the Saga, there are two or three crazy conspiracy theories that have become BlitzTruth. Evans being a monster is one of them.

Does he deserve life membership? I have no idea personally, but my personal view is that any Essendon administrator/player/bootstudder who had to live through that 2013 year (whether they did a great, average or terrible job) deserves a g0ddamn medal. I was acutely stressed about it the entire year and that’s just as a fan. I cannot even imagine how awful it would have been on the inside, let alone up the top where the big decisions were being made.

Anyway I know this is a very unpopular view around here so I’ll leave it at that

Maybe he’s not stepping down voluntarily?

Add that possibility to the Evans LM, and the surely expected questions re the 34 & Senate enqiry etc, & perhaps being aware of BF’s sure presence … & you might start to wonder if they thought this one was better off being unstreamed??

I doubt anyone has suggested that he deliberately set out to screw the club, rather, that he considered scapegoating a few would be the end of it, with the blame attached to a select few in the football department and none to himself or the Board.
There was more than an error of judgment. There was an arrogance in thinking that between himself and his AFL mates they had the power to determine outcomes.

He was obviously conflicted between his life long friendship with Andrew D, the EFC and the players and staff. He failed to check the information given to him by A.D and made decisions that cost the club, the staff, the players. Evans asked James Hird to lie about a phone call he had with A.D. When Hird didn’t lie he threw him under a bus. Life Membership from the EFC, I think not.

Judge the man by his behaviour and once again, he is in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. This is a man the club certainly doesn’t need in the forefront of its ranks.

Sometimes, money doesn’t change a thing. Class and integrity cannot be bought.

I think it’s more the fact that he took a step back and let everyone else take the bullets for something he clearly knew a lot about.

He’s never spoken publicly and just watched as others got their lives torn apart.

We all have questions that we would have loved him to clarify but he chose to remain silent to save himself and his business ventures.

He never fought for the club or the club legends involved. And that is why he is not an Essendon person.

From the Latin, collūsiō, from collūdere to collude - or to ‘play together’. IF multiple parties did in fact meet and play together, the question is whether they were conspiring to manufacture an outcome that could be considered illegal - such as an obstruction of justice - which is a crime under the Crimes Act. It’s a moot point because whatever secret dealings ‘may have been going on’ early in the piece were abandoned. The ‘let’s do a deal’ was replaced with the new approach of ‘Essendon is going down. Whatever it takes’. Oh the irony. Literally use our slogan to make us a scapegoat for rampant supplements use in the comp at the time (12 clubs?). Yep - right royally rogered.

Getting in bed with the devil is no biggie. Disbelieve and ignore your own employees when they claim that no banned substances were being injected. Why? Because poor governance created a seed of doubt and because there was confusion early on as to what had been administered? Not being able to categorically state what had been administered doesn’t automatically mean or prove that banned substances had been taken. And with a complete lack of evidence it is impossible for one to make that leap. But, that didn’t matter to Dave, did it? Truth was never the object. Finding a way to cover up the mess was far more important. And what better way to do that than to jump into bed with the devil. Of course, doing so is always going to be on the devil’s terms. That’s the price you pay for the belly bumping dance. Self report. Cop a whack. Scapegoat a few, but save the majority. Minimise damage. How did all that work out? Doc Reid wasn’t gunna cop to that. He instigated court proceedings and the AFL backed down. Jimmy wanted to fight the good fight, but his mate tried to persuade him otherwise. Davey - the man who never fought for anything - not for truth, not for the players, not for his best mate and certainly not for the club he purported to love. Minimise damage. Optics. The corporate - not human way.

The infamous phonecall. Did Vlad tip off Evans that the EFC were about to be investigated? Evans says no. Vlad says no. Now, Jimmy - you may have been privy to the “non-tip”, so speak up son and answer any questions that ASADA put to you, but I am personally gunna omit any mention of a ‘potential’ tip-off. Now, that doesn’t read right, does it? I mean, if there were no tip off, then no such discussion would have taken place between the great mates, Dave and Jimmy. But, a discussion did take place. Someone lied here - but whom? Jimmy vs the Dave and Vlad cabal - I know who I believe. Sharing the truth here could have had serious legal implications for multiple parties. ‘They’ chose to hide the truth and save their own skins. Others ultimately suffered. Liars and cowards.

"I want to apologise to our players and their families, to our members and supporters, to the AFL community, about what has happened at Essendon. I am deeply sorry this has happened on my watch. I will fight to ensure there is zero tolerance to risky procedures at our club”. - David Evans.

And then…

David Evans resigns days before ASADA’s findings were handed down. Left the club & its personnel in a complete mess. Allowed others to clean it all up. Returns a couple of years later once Hird was out of the picture. Did he slowly ingratiate himself back into the fold or did we invite him back or a bit of both?

Since his 2013 departure, has Evans apologised to the Club, the players, their families and members/supporters? Has he opened up and provided an honest and truthful account of what really happened? Why didn’t he ever ask to see any evidence? Why did he come across as convinced of our guilt and sought to broker a deal? Why does he remain silent (still now) and allow others to continue suffering, while he enjoys a lavish lifestyle flying around in his 10 million dollar chopper to his 14 million dollar home and getting himself entangled in all sorts of ‘interesting’ business dealings? He has no regrets. And his lack of remorse and honesty is infuriating.

Evans presided over the darkest time in the club’s history and has been rewarded with life membership? If one felt a degree of personal responsibility for what happened and were truly remorseful for one’s central role - wouldn’t you politely decline such a personal and honorary gesture? Jobe returned his Charlie. And he did nothing wrong. It was a mightily symbolic gesture from a truly decent man. A man of integrity and character. Why has Evans been inducted now? Why ever? He should be grateful that he is allowed to walk back into ‘our’ club ever again. To induct and basically immortalise him is a horrible decision, IMO. But, you wanna give him a medal? And you reckon he receives a massively unfair wrap on Blitz? Poor old Davey from the Collins Street of town.

Simple answer is despite what happened you cannot and will not get anywhere questioning a Corporate governing body, especially one backed by WADA and answerable too.

Let it all go and move forward because that’s all really everyone can do as the other is t in their control unfortunately

Thanks for there advice Anabelle but I am not going to let it go. The truth is very powerful. The AFL, David Evans, ASADA, WADA and CAS all caused great harm to the Essendon Football Club, including the players and the 2012/13 support staff. And I believe it is important the Australian community understands what actually happened. If the AFL, Evans, ASADA, WADA and CAS apologise I will let it go. And of course if Watson gets his Brownlow back

That makes the decision to award LM to Evans even more deplorable.
There’s a shocking stain on giving it to Evans because many members don’t reckon he’s worthy of it. That should have been taken into account when the Board went through the process. Would love to know who put him up for it, and who on the Board backed it in.
You just don’t do it with the acrimony towards Evans.

I reckon EFC gives out Life Memberships far too easily. If a Player or coaches plays/coaches for 200 games. if an Club Official or Worker gives 30 years of service, but giving Paul Little a Life membership for being Club President for 10 minutes and because he is rich is just BS.

And seriously, Hirdy gets the sack and Jobe loses a Charlie due to the “Saga” so why would anyone on the Committee at the time get an honour like being made a Life Member. And if farking Evans get one for the Hanger, then what about me; I gave money for the project.

The truth will come out, and it’ll be generally acknowledged. It usually does, but the thing is, it usually does a long, long way down the track.

It’ll be something like, I dunno, the perception of the vietnam war or something. Eventually, someone will write history. And by then, the people in power at the time who knew the truth all along and were lying through their teeth about it, will be in different jobs or nearing retirement and won’t have so much left to lose so might talk, and will have less clout so won’t be able to force others to keep their mouths shut any more. And once the first couple start talking, everyone will, because they’ll want to get their side of the story out first rather than let someone else scapegoat them. And a new generation of journos, writers etc will look into it, who weren’t hypnotised by the conventional wisdom at the time. In 20 years probably, once Gil and Wilson and McDevitt and Fahey etc are safely out of power and can no longer retaliate, there’ll be a quiet re-evaluation and then everyone’ll be acting as though the stitch-up was common knowledge the whole time.

Of course, by then, it’ll be too late. It’ll be just an interesting and colourful piece of football history. A good yarn. There’ll be no consequences for the people responsible, they will have all retired to private islands with a trophy wife the age of their granddaughter, or else moved on to other high-paying corporate jobs in unrelated fields. And there’ll be nothing meaningful that can be done for the victims.

I also donated money for the project. To get a brick with my name on it.

Whatever happened to that plan?

Aren’t the bricks at Windy Hill, or am I misremembering?

Nah it was definitely Tulla. I remember adding 200 bucks to my membership as a donation for it.

You seem to forget the players love DE

It’s an interesting point that was raised to me a couple of nights ago. My response then & now is do they? And what players? Only 7 players remain on our current list who were there during David’s tenure. As to the 34, I really don’t know how they currently feel about David & the extent of their individual relationships with him. I vaguely recall a media snippet of him chatting with a few players post-game a few years ago, but I wouldn’t really call that love.

Give Jobe his Brownlow back.

I doubt there would have been few willing to take on the Presidency when Evans disappeared. Little had nothing to gain, but had the courage to take on the AFL and reportedly was Hird’s white knight in funding the Federal Court litigation costs. He was also prepared to associate with Hird when few others would.
A lot more than a 10 minute President.
I can also imagine the carry on in the MSM if Little had been given LM but not Evans. At least we have been spared that.

I’m not disagreeing with you, I support everything you say.

Facts are facts though, all parties/personal including EFC are guilty.

There are no winners only losers from all aspects and parties/personal.

The truth will always be twisted, hidden, covered up, masked, blamed, along with so many variations and opinions it won’t fully be known only from individual perspectives. In time there will be individuals that have their say on their version of the truth, however because there are so many parties/agencies/personal involved the entirety of the whole saga will never be fully known. All because of the the reasons of truth above.

You’ll never find a government agency admit anything nor with they care about 34 players or a football club when it can place them in a very precarious position of such exposure and vulnerability. This will simply in time be something of history and forgotten about and or minimised as a story for future generations to come.

For now best thing for our 34 previous and current players including the club is to get on with life/football and strive to winning the ultimate prize which is some wats is a small consolation and a silver lining to what is a tradgedy for those past and present players. Chasing, spending countless energy, letting this consume people will only do them no good chasing the truth and cause further pain sadly. Sometimes it’s best letting things go if the cost is more and be truthful to yourself which is in the end all that matters
