They are not going to invest the time or money to get out to country football to develop 12yo kids or any of the other development programs that those on the outside don’t see or probably don’t even know exist. And that’s before you get to the little mentioned point that that the SANFL owns/manages the Adelaide oval in a watertight deal with the government and I can’t see the AFL stumping up for another new oval anytime soon
Have you seen the norf vs lions result?
There’s no competition in NSW and Queensland to go against. It’s their own market.
What makes you think that if SANFL and WAFL no longer existed, that the people who currently turn up to those competitions on gameday and spend money would continue to do so and it would generate enough revenue to pay for clubs flying interstate, the staff involved specifically for those competitions, ground maintenance and costs, etc?
It’ll be the same in VFL here. The old VFA, could stand on its own. The crowds to those games were fantastic. But as soon as the AFL took over VFL and aligned clubs, attendance dropped away completely. For both aligned and non-aligned clubs.
It’ll be more cost effective to just fund the competitions in its current state. But that probably won’t be received well because then some teams who feed AFL teams more than others (be it at the draft or otherwise) have to give up money to other teams who don’t.
So then we cycle back to applying compensation to the local teams that directly fund AFL (via draft or otherwise) as Aceman intimated.
Both competitions need each other to keep going. Without one, there isn’t another. But I’m not expecting any movement on these anytime soon.
Exactly my point.
The AFL could do this so much better but like most things they simply don’t care or are too inept.
None of this matters because the SANFL aren’t going anywhere and will continue to feed talent to the AFL mid season.
Of course they will but compensation will definitely happen in the coming years. There will be a transfer style system introduced for definitely the MSD and possibly some other transfers
The only answer is much bigger rookie lists using a seconds team like the VFL as an injury roster and scrapping the MSD. That way clubs can invest more in their seconds team, stack injury protection and talent and have priority access to them.
If clubs has 10-12 rookies that can only be elevated in the event of injury then you could dump the MSD.
remember Peverill in 2001 elevated rookie, then injured guy came back and he couldn’t play finals.
just increase lists and all can play.
Doesn’t compensation already occur, it’s just pathetic ($10k or so?)
Definitely needs an increase (but nowhere near the $500k included in the cap you suggested previously). $100k or so seems reasonable, but I wouldn’t include it in the cap.
Might end up reducing the number of players taken, but sounds like that’s the aim anyway.
Surely we have a chance to recruit a @benfti special??
It’s clear the move from Northern/Western Australia to a professional AFL life is seriously difficult but this is the perfect opportunity to
trial someone on the cusp.
Nothing to lose.
I would love another Dean Rioli (skilful) Tippa (pace) Kickett (70m torps) type. (All in 1)
Not much to ask??
Maybe we can invite Dodoro back just for the mid season draft😉
What’s Fejo up to these days…
(Looks like he’s in the Bendigo football league, but not setting the world on fire).
Szekely has missed the boat but geez he is good to watch
I actually like the MSD for this reason. It’s a rule that actually brings about more equalisation. The lower teams can get access to better quality players.
Just chilling. Waiting for blitz and efc to admit they chose the wrong guy. Skinny vanilla plodder.
At some point (not today), you’re going to need a new username as people will forget all about Ronald Fejo Jnr’s untapped talent from those few games he played in the SANFL reserves
For me it’s the 2 disposals he had in our VFL side before unfortunately getting injured.
What could have been…
Nobody could sidestep like me. Nobody.
Is Baldwin still injured?
