The head of nuclear research in Iraq was a woman.
Seems strange you can comment on Iran then versus subsequent, but not Iran versus prior, because you only visited it once…

Not that strange really…from my memory, Iran was rarely mentioned in Australian media prior to the overthrow of the Shah so unless someone had a particular interest in the place, they generally wouldn’t know much about it.
Then when the revolution happened, Iran got heaps of press (mainly negative) due to their hardline stance on individual freedoms and their hardcore version of Islam.
Relations with Iran have been an utter mess since the Shah was deposed.
Some parallels with the US-Cuba relationship.
Iran hostages, Iraq, with some strange bedfellows, invades Iran, 8 years of war.
Iran contra deal. Chemical weapons imported from the West, kill an estimated 5k Iranians.
Oddly, women in Iran and Iraq enjoy more freedoms, including access to education , than those in some other Middle East countries
I visited a couple of times on business around then and it was a very lively fun place. The Universities were first rate and women had no limits on their activities. Remember some great night spots and bars.
I could have a business there again but our Government and the Yanks prevent that.
Is that tautology ?
Turkey bombing Kurds in NE Syria and Iraq.
Turkey threatening use of land forces in Kurd strongholds in Syria, further attacks on Iraq Kurds.
Kurds bomb Turkish town.
Iran attacks Kurds in Iraq.
Russia and USA both urge Turkey to exercise restraint .
It’s like the last days of the Shah.

I hope for regime change in Iran.
The move to the right in Israeli politics is concerning.
The Supreme Leader , Ayatollah Khamenei ( who gets elected by the Assembly of Experts, seems to hold all the internal power, including the Morality Police, the Revolutionary Guard and the Basij Resistance Force.
His term is due to expire in 2024…
Reportedly, the President , Rais, is seen as his successor. He was elected last year in a rigged election, with many not bothering to vote on that account.
Is there a viable Opposition that could force out the Supreme Leader and President?
Pro reformers can’t get past obstacle one, the Guardian Council. I really can’t see reform happening within current constructs. Whoever or whatever makes up the reform movement would need the revolutionary guards and military. Seems unlikely.
A bomb was detonated on a Jerusalem bus today by an Arab terrorist. Daily reminder of what’s it like.
Remind us what it’s like for the everyday Palestinian living in a makeshift cage for some balanced opinion numb nuts
Numb nuts? Go and get farked
What’s it like living in an apartheid state?
I’m not sure the comparison is valid…how many Palestinian buses get bombed by Israeli’s?
I’m fine with the Palestinians wanting their own state but they’re never going to get it while some of their people keep bombing/shooting/firing rockets at the Israeli’s.
And one thing that people always seem to forget…what have the other Arab nations done to help the Palestinians?..not a whole lot as far as I’m aware.
It’s a perfectly valid comparison. The bombing and shooting of Palestinians, namely children, occurs so often it’s a meme at this point.
Palestine will never get their own state because notionally what is their area is continually taken over by Israelian settlers - There is no such thing as a two state solution - Both sides will have to live alongside each other in one state.
