Midfield Trade Targets

Just going to mention there’s a whole separate category for these kinds of discussion.

I loved how some people were naming their best 22 for 2018, these teams included Rockliff, Hopper, Kennedy, Jones, Kelly and Martin, heck some of you more delusional posters had about 3 - 4 of the above names in their best 22. Just accept if we get anyone it’ll come from the likes of McVeigh, Balic, Sheridan, Miles

Then give Bird a contract. Or Hocking. Or Howlett

They’re all sensational VFL players, just like miles, plenty capable of filling this glaring gap (of having 30 in the vfl every week).

While we play Hepp at half back and Langford half forward all year because “we don’t have any midfielders”.

I’d like Hepp in the guts. Langford isn’t there yet - but may be close.
Moving on…
Bird’s problem is bad decision making, and sub-par delivery. That can’t be carried in the middle. I like Howlett as a mid - but he is not the type we need. If he was a bit bigger, maybe. We have a lot of 'if’s. Our mids are either too slow, past their prime and/or do not suit the current game style, or, are very young and developing - and on the smaller side. I would love to see Begley in the middle, heaving it out. Like a Wines. Our greatest potentials are all smaller - McG, Parish, Zerret. Zaka/Walla/Colyer/Fanta/Green can all rotate through, but are more outside carriers. We need inside extractors, now, if we are to keep above water until more recruits come on.

Wanting to get rid of blokes like howlett, hocking, bird…but then wanting to bring in someone like miles, who is a reasonably limited, similar player to those above, would be one of the most stupidest things a list manager could do. It makes absolutely zero sense.

I don’t see those three players as very similar to each other though, do you?

Yeah I think them 3 are very similar players. All three are slow, unskilled inside contested players.

What the? How do they differ?

I don’t think Howlett or Bird will be at EFC next year.

Is miles the richmond guy who every time he gets tackled drops to his knees and gets a free kick?

No that’s Joel Selwood.

He was until he turned into the richmond guy who can’t get a game because they got real midfielders

they exist?

It’s basically when a half back flanker pushes up the ground, but not so far up the ground that they become a half forward flanker.

I see them as very different. And so do the coaches, based on how they are used. They all lack the skills we need for the current game style, and their respective attributes have them outside anywhere they could be fit as a compromise - and never kid yourself thinking there are no compromises made in even the most successful team lists. Most know their weaknesses, there’s no need for me to outline them, and they are not similar in either their roles, their strengths, or their best positions.

Look - to get my point back on track a little - I’m not saying Miles would be a great get for us. I’m not even advocating it - no need to polarise the issue. What I am saying, is that a younger inside-mid type of player is actually what we need till we pick up a gun, or develop a few. I think statements like ‘it would be the worst decision ever to be made’ are pretty much useless.

Which is EXACTLY why it’s stupid to go after Miles. WOB gets it. He’s arguably worse than Bird with ball in hand, and no quicker across the ground.

Do the coaches see that?

With Hocking and Watson gone we need someone to keep Langford from ever finding his feet at senior level.

If that’s the case, then we shouldn’t pick him up.
See?
It’s not all about winning arguments.

Thats been our philosophy for the last ten years,
