The pilots have a bit to answer for it appears.

Guess it’s Qantas for me.

It’s not the hardest landing I’ve seen, but a distinct lack of flare at the end.
Keep in mind, landing in such conditions requires a much firmer landing than normal.

You can’t really feather the plane down in strong winds, I’ve been on a plane landing at Sydney that basically dove onto the runway to get down in harsh conditions. But if you do that, you need to avoid the sudden stop at the bottom…

So there was a fire, at least initially.

Yeah, when the wing was torn off, the fuel tanks in the wing ruptured, luckily the wing had separated from the fuselage when it ignited.
They were very very lucky.

Apparently the wing breaking off is part of the design these days. Separate fuel source from the main body… Ace could add to this.

Well I guess they were very lucky not to die in a crash, not so sure they were lucky to be involved in one in the first place.

The plane was a crj-900 which i believe have been around fro a long time, not sure it would be a modern design

They are looking for it again.

They were so lucky considering they went against all regulations and removed all their cabin baggage whilst evacuating AND still having time to take selfies and upload pics to social media

Could the crash have been much worse if it was a bigger plane?

Too many variables to know really.

I have significant doubts about this. The wing root is pretty much the critical load path, and there are also normally tanks in the fuselage as well.

I saw some news reports on this so not reporting it as gospel. It’s why I asked Ace.

ADD
The structural elements of an aircraft are designed so that the wings and the tail will break off and away if the plane tips over, McCormick said. The seats are designed to withstand impacts up to 16 times the force of gravity, so they will remain in place when the plane is upside down.

Toronto flight flip-over prompted unusual evacuation.

Cool, I’m hardly a crashworthiness specialist. I doubt Ace is either. Obviously there are crash loads cases that are relevant here.

Same. I just found it interesting.
