That has always been a contentious issue as the Chinese have always claimed that it was engineered with Russian assistance and parts whilst others believe that it’s a full Chinese knock off that was reverse engineered and built from scratch. They are and upgraded model but would still be 15-20 years old. They are considered rubbish by many but probably suits the Bengladeshi budget

China has recently experienced a series of fires in overhead compartments due to powerbanks and are banning those to be taken on unless they are CCC certified

Yeah, it’s coming in everywhere.
The only surprise is how long it’s taken.

I saw plenty of Migs of the vintage on my first trip to Vietnam in 1993. At that stage the US still had an embargo in the country and we were limited as to what provinces we could go to, some because we weren’t permitted and others because the roads had been bombed to much that some areas were not accessible by bus. We were in a Chevy Nova, an ex-CIA staff car. On the way down from Dalat to Nha Trang we stopped at a Cham Tower. About 5 km behind it was a large Viet airbase, and the Migs were taking off at regular intervals. they were quite active. A couple of days later we visited China Beach. Stopping off there for a swim we witnessed Migs flying low, along the beach, with their landing gear down. The Migs were only one sign that the war had not been over all that long ago.

My first trip to Vietnam was on business a few years before that. It was very much controlled with a chaperone with me every day, attending all my meetings. The guy was pleasant enough and spoke good English with a French accent, some of the other officials were not as friendly. I did not blame them one bit especially when I saw the destruction that the US bombing did.

Today Vietnam is my favourite place in Asia, and the people are just so friendly and welcoming.

A close friend, a vet of the Vietnam war went back there a decade ago, he was nervous about going but he went. He said that it was a fantastic trip, the people were sensational and even after visiting the places he was stationed at, there was no ill feeling at all re the war.

Agree. It’s a fantastic country.

Although, it was the first place I ever travelled overseas, and it was a real eye opener walking the street at night and seeing police officers armed with some form of assault rifle.

If you drive down from Hà Nội south to Hue and Hoi An, you travel through large forests of gum trees. I asked our driver about it and he said that the US bombed the whole region out of existence with Agent Orange and it killed all plant life. When it rained the erosion of so bad that villages would get washed away in mudslides. So they looked for a quick growing tree that would hold the mountains and hills together, so Aussie gums were chosen. They then developed a large export business in eucalyptus oil, and made innovative medical lotion and cosmetics. When told this I was shocked and angry, but the Vietnamese people just smile and get on with life without any noticeable hate at all.

We did a motorcycle tour around Hue and my driver (me sitting on the back) showed us all the battle sites and the horrors of the carpetbombing, again just like a history lesson with no angst.

The moment a gull collided with a Spanish fighter jet and smashed through its cockpit has been captured in an extraordinary photograph.

The £73m war plane was performing in the Eurofighter display at the San Javier Air Base on June 15 when the incident happened. The pilot was unharmed and landed safely.
