Have hours in a T-tail Lance. Lost close friends in that one too.
Another Rex engine failure. You wonder if they are spending enough on maintenance given their current financial issues?
Their SAAB 340âs are getting on a bit too, they ceased manufacture in 1999.

Qantas have aircraft 35 years old. As long as they are maintained regularly they are fine.
Rex being government subsided whilst under VA is a real concern though and I wouldnât be getting on one currently
You are kind of making my point. With new aircraft the maintenance load is somewhat less, you canât cost cut with older aircraft they need TLC with many more parts coming up for renewal.
Yes, the various A, B, C and D checks are all done at regular intervals but where it gets murky is if parts arenât proactively changed before intervals or maintenance is lax or corners cut. Personally at that age anything major needing replacing would be a write off for me and the fleet should have already been replaced. Not a very attractive proposition for anyone looking to buy Rex IMO
âBathtub curveâ
Just looking at the Saab website, theyâre claiming 200k cycles of fatigue testing and up to a 75 year life so youâd think the key maintenance is pretty squared away. That said it seems to have a bunch of bonded structure which youâd perhaps question whether fatigue testing accurately represents in real world conditions.
Hong Kong airport isnât Kai Tak anymore, is it?
Not for a long time.
Didnât drop into the ocean it seems
Hit a GSV though and 2 crew missing
Coming up to 30 years soon. I still climb up to checkerboard hill when I visit Hong Kong
Geez, it did topple over the sea wall
One confirmed death already
Bad weather or pilot error?
