It will be a golf course soon enough.
Be interesting what crowd it draws.
Half the crowd at F1 these days is women which is why it sells out and its as popular.
Cant say ive met many if any women into the bikes outside of motorcycle circles.
First one should be well attended but after that… will need an aussie to come through and be the flag bearer for the event or another Rossi.
Given bikes stopped racing at Bathurst in 2000. Was primarily due to rider safety although the bikers going crazy in the camping areas was part of the reason. Has never comeback although there was some talk of building another circuit up there that would be safe for bikes. That seems to have died off though.
Just saw the proposed track. The parkland section probably won’t be too difficult to make compliant, the existing city streets I’ve no idea.
Looking to run the MotoGP and Supercars on back to weekends and have a fortnight Motorsport festival with concerts and the like for the whole period.
They get over 280k to the Supercars so I guess if they got 150k to the MotoGp that would be a good outcome and I’d imagine the Adelaide folks will come in droves. Depends on how many from interstate or overseas come out but facilities will be fantastic
Many people ride from interstate (NSW, QLD) to go to PI, taking in parts of the Great Dividing Range and/or east coast along the way. That trip just got a whole lot less attractive if Adelaide is the destination. Not that Dorna would give a ■■■■■.
True.
But for those of us in Melbourne or similar, it does now give me a road trip possibility. GOR , across to Gambier , Victor Harbour etc. That part of it, I like the sound of.
Pretty intrigued to see if they do run it back-to-back weekends. Supercars wouldn’t overly be keen on changing the track layout too much and I doubt they could turn it around in ~4 days.
Yeah, the GOR speed traps will make a killing that week.
I suspect they will have to have a week off in between.
They definitely don’t want to be closing the surrounding roads twice during the year. Better to do it for say 4 weeks and be done with it
Also we don’t want us sophisticated motorcycle riders to mix with the bogan supercars fans. Need time to gat the first lot home before the bikes.
On the other hand, it might be safer if we’re all in Adelaide before every SS commodore in the country is hitting the road for home with wannabe Brocky’s at the wheel…
Actually, running it in late November is going to completely upend the Motogp schedule. It’d have to be the final round of the season, and Japan, Indonesia , Malaysia might have to be the run-in races.
Especially with GNR playing the after race gig.
Won’t be enough Jim Beam in the state to cater for that many bogans
The funny thing about Supercars is that it’s super expensive to get into so you often see very wealthy enthusiasts there as much as you see the bogans. The expense adds a level of elitism to it which they eat up.
Will they have to get rid of all the gutters?
Official announcement from Makinauskas
MotoGP will be 2 weeks before Supercars, roads will be opened up in between.
More track will be inside Victoria Park, pits will be next to the current heritage stand on the outer edge, the rest of the track will follow the old F1 circuit, with 45 trees to go to make it happen.
I asked Steve Dimopoulos today and he was adamant that no matter how much money the Government offered to throw at Phillip Island, Dorna Sports said it has to be a city street circuit, and hence at Albert Park. I actually not sure you can really call Albert Park a street circuit, but anyway SA Govt has agreed to do what Dorna want. Dorna own SuperBikes as well.
I have known Steve since he was a LG Councillor like me back in 2005, and he is a really straight bloke politically ( he is not-straight otherwise, being gay). He said they will work on alternative events for Phillip Island.
And let’s be honest, this decision wasn’t made a day ago. This has been in the works for months. They wanted an inner city track and the Adelaide presentation was done some time ago.
I guess we will find out if the SA race is all talk or not as the largest MotoGP crowd ever has sits at 300k and the SA spruikers are saying we will top that easily. I think PI was averaging around the 90k mark so if they can 300k that’s some serious coin for them.
The Superbikes will come here too but probably to the Bend. That will be a nice little sweetener from the SA government on top of some extra cough funds that will miraculously find there way there
